Overview
The single-role community paramedic (SR-CP) is a civilian position that performs emergency and non-emergency medical functions, including advanced life support (ALS) procedures, in accordance with Denver Metro Prehospital Protocols (DMPP), the District's rules, policies, and procedures, and guidance of the District's Medical Director. The SR-CP supports treatment-in-place and social service navigation functions in a Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) setting, reporting directly to the station officer while on shift and to the EMS Captain.
The SR-CP does not participate in any firefighting-related activities. Demonstrate knowledge of the District’s policies, procedures, and protocols. Provide services and care of sick or injured patients in alignment with the guidance of a mid-level provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) while working together on the Advanced Resource Medic (ARM) car in a MIH setting. Involved in social services navigation and interdisciplinary collaboration in support of community healthcare.
The Community Paramedic will assist the EMS division in identifying unmet healthcare needs outside traditional community resources and developing innovative ways to meet those needs.
- Provide treatment interventions within the scope of community paramedicine as allowed by medical direction and participate in the development and delivery of associated training.
- Interview patients using developed assessment tools to evaluate which community and medical resources may be available to stabilize the patient's situation and facilitate more appropriate use of emergency care resources. Refer patients to identified resources as appropriate and track patient progress.
- Perform patient assessment and management of illness or injury for all patients. Examine patients to determine the presence of probable or possible injury or illness. Take and record all patient vital signs and advanced diagnostics per protocol.
- Help establish and reinforce working relationships with community partners and facilitate integration and collaboration between EMS and other healthcare and social service providers. Monitor the quality and appropriateness of patient care and document the effectiveness of community paramedic program protocols, policies, and procedures. Recommend changes in protocols and standards to the EMS captain.
- Transfer, lift, and move patients while employing appropriate safety and lifting techniques.
- Lead and/or participate in the direct management of the patient’s illness or injury.
- Perform complex diagnostic and medical procedures, including but not limited to intravenous cannulation, endotracheal intubation, recognition of cardiac arrhythmias, administration of various medications, including DEA-scheduled drugs, and usage of testing and laboratory equipment.
- Complete patient care information and required documentation in compliance with all established District procedures.
- Check all personal gear, assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools to ensure safe and effective operation.
- Operate apparatus safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the District's policies and procedures.
- Maintain familiarity with maps and related streets and roads within the District's service area.
- Participate in all scheduled and assigned training classes and prevention activities.
- Develop and maintain positive, effective working relationships with District employees, volunteers, district residents, other governmental agencies, and the community.
- Maintain positive and constructive written and oral communication skills at all times.
- Work well in a progressive, team-oriented environment.
