Job Overview
The single-role emergency medical technician (SR-EMT) is a civilian position holding an EMT-basic certification. The SR-EMT performs emergency and non-emergency medical functions, including care and procedures in accordance with Denver Metro Prehospital Protocols (DMPP), the District's rules, policies, and procedures, and guidance of the District's Medical Director. The SR-EMT engages in a variety of Emergency Medical Service (EMS) needs, including supporting Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) services, ambulance transports, EMS training, EMS inventory management, and other EMS functions as needed.
The SR-EMT reports directly to the EMS Captain and to the station officer when staffing an EMS resource. The SR-EMT does not participate in any firefighting-related activities.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the District’s policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Provide rescue and EMT life support at emergency scenes and, as assigned, for assistance to sick or injured persons, treating them according to the DMPP, including the use of intravenous therapy, endotracheal intubation, pharmacological therapy, pacing, cardioversion, and defibrillation when indicated and as certified to do so.
- Perform patient assessment and management of illness or injury for all patients. Examine patients to determine the presence of probable or possible injury or illness. Take and record all patient vital signs and advanced diagnostics per protocol.
- Transfer, lift, and move patients while employing appropriate safety and lifting techniques.
- Lead and/or participate in the direct management of the patient’s illness or injury.
- Perform complex diagnostic and medical procedures as certified, including, but not limited to, intravenous cannulation, endotracheal intubation, recognition of cardiac arrhythmias, administration of various medications, including DEA-scheduled drugs, and usage of testing and laboratory equipment.
- Complete patient care information and required documentation in compliance with all established District procedures.
- Check all personal gear, assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools to ensure safe and effective operation.
- Operate apparatus safely and efficiently, in accordance with the District's policies and procedures.
- Maintain familiarity with maps and related streets and roads within the District's service area.
- Participate in all scheduled and assigned training classes.
- Maintain all District required certifications and other training requirements.
- Develop and maintain positive, effective working relationships with District employees, volunteers, District residents, other governmental agencies, and the community.
- Maintain positive and constructive written and oral communication skills at all times.
- Work well in a progressive, team-oriented environment.
- Provide excellent service to the community.

- Promote a positive, professional image of the District at all times.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
- Possess strong communication skills, including but not limited to the preparation of clear, concise, and accurate written reports.
- Possess the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the position, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills, and the ability to present ideas and instructions effectively.
- Ability to interact and cohabitate with other employees in a firehouse setting.
- Strong public relations and customer service skills, to include interactions with other agencies, co-workers, and the public in both routine and emergency settings.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, officials, and the public.
- Familiarity and proficiency in the use of Windows Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Systems, District records management software, learning management software, and other District software in relation to accounting and scheduling.
