Position SummaryThe Pharmacy Technician works under licensed pharmacists to prepare and dispense medications to patients of the health center in accordance with all local and federal laws governing pharmacy practice. The Technician also provides exceptional customer service to all patients and staff members while performing the duties listed below.
Responsibilities- Dispense prescription drugs and other healthcare items to patients as directed by a licensed pharmacist.
- Prepare the pharmacy for business each day by turning on equipment such as computers, printers, and scanners, and sterilizing counters, pill‑counting trays, and medication measuring devices.
- Follow safety and security guidelines and the related laws and regulations when handling, storing, and providing pharmacy records, and when filling prescriptions.
- Check the entire inventory every month for expired medications and process medications that are near expiry to be shipped back to a reverse distributor.
- Process prescriptions from start to finish in the pharmacy filling software, preparing medications and providing the pharmacist with the labeled medication(s) and appropriate patient educational material for final verification.
- Greeter patients, respond to their questions about medications, and arrange for them to speak with the pharmacist.
- Gather appropriate medication information such as allergies and insurance from the patient chart in Athena and add new patients to the pharmacy patient database, updating the patient’s language preference.
- Handle clerical duties such as answering phones and operating the cash register.
- Acknowledge and ring up patient medication(s) at pickup in a timely manner.
- Verify last name, DOB, and address of all patients prior to the sale of any medication.
- Maintain merchandise presentation in the pharmacy by stocking and rotating items on shelves; remove damaged or expired medications and update on‑hand counts in RXQ‑Liberty.
- Stock daily medication deliveries quickly and accurately, and report any discrepancies to the pharmacist on duty. Also fill all out‑of‑stock prescriptions from the prior business day in a timely fashion.
- Count registers down to $150 on a nightly basis and complete the end‑of‑day process at the POS when on duty with a pharmacist.
- Drop the daily cash envelope with necessary paperwork in the designated safe when on duty with a pharmacist.
- Ensure work is done correctly, accurately, and timely to meet deadlines.
- Plan for and improve work, accepting responsibility and meeting expectations for own work.
- Communicate effectively with associates and customers in a respectful and professional manner.
- Show integrity and ethical behavior in all work situations, reporting ethical and compliance issues promptly.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
- Registration with the NJ Board of Pharmacy is required within the first six months of employment (OHI will assist).
- Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Must possess excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.
