RequirementsI. Overview of the Position
The Senior Pastor of Lakewood Baptist (GARBC) is a leader called by the Holy Spirit to serve as the under shepherd of Jesus Christ in guiding the congregation of Lakewood Baptist Church in a life-transforming relationship with the crucified and risen Son of God, Jesus Christ. This role requires the pastor to lead believers in alignment with Biblical truth, church doctrine, and the church covenant.
Responsibilities include weekly sermons, teaching Sunday School and Bible studies, leading prayer meetings, and conducting special services (e.g. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and other special services throughout the year), as well as providing spiritual guidance to the church leadership, committees, etc. The Senior Pastor will also address congregational needs such as pre-marital counseling, officiating at weddings and funerals, and conduct individual visitation for members, attenders and visitors, providing spiritual care.
II. Responsibilities
Preaching and Teaching
· Preach and teach God’s Word as the foundation of faith and the Christian Life and the source of strength for good works and obedience. (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
· Prayerful preparation to deliver messages that comfort, exhort, admonish and instruct and encourage the congregation.
· Use preaching and teaching to facilitate the work of the Holy Spirit in bringing spiritual growth, healing, and hope, while equipping believers to share the gospel.
· Emphasize the power of God’s Word to build faith, as described in Romans 10: 14-17.
· And to connect believers to the grace and truth found in Christ’s death and resurrection.
Supporting Christian Education
· Collaborate with the Christian Education Committee to develop, implement, and monitor a Christian education program that fosters Bible literacy and spiritual growth for all ages.
· Guide the congregation in applying Biblical principles to personal and societal challenges.
· Assist with Vacation Bible School (VBS) planning and coordinate special programs between the Christian Education Committee and other church committees and or boards.
· Teach Sunday School or other classes deemed appropriate to support Christian Education.
Interpreting the Faith
· Interpret the faith in ways that are Biblically grounded, prayerfully considered, and Christ exalting.
· Engage deeply with Scripture to provide well-reasoned and edifying insights.
· Draw upon the historical Baptist theological positions and practices to strengthen the congregation’s faith.
· Connect the truths of Scripture to the experiences of believers, emphasizing love for God and one another as central to the Christian life.
Promoting Evangelism
· Support LBC’s commitment to evangelism by encouraging members to share their faith and lead others to Christ.
· Help develop individual gifts of evangelism within the congregation, equipping members to articulate the hope they have in Christ with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15).
· Promote local outreach efforts such as VBS and partnerships with other compatible Christian ministries, while maintaining strong support for missions through the church’s missions program.
Providing Pastoral Care
· Celebrate life events such as engagements, weddings (including pre-marital counseling), births or other milestones.
