Position: Construction Materials Tester (EPSA III) - Lamar

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Position

This position, located in Lamar, supports engineers in materials testing, construction inspection, and field data collection. You will be certified to perform industry standard testing procedures and use specialized equipment to take measurements, analyze samples, and record results. The position ensures contractors' work complies with approved plans, specifications, and construction requirements. Ideal candidates have strong attention to detail and interest in engineering and quality control.

  • Responsible for sampling and field testing of materials on assigned construction projects. Collect test materials, run appropriate tests, analyze samples, and report abnormal results to the project engineer.
  • Schedule and perform materials sampling and testing at field facilities to ensure materials comply with contract specifications and industry standards.
  • Acquire and maintain certifications for asphalt, concrete, and soils testing (LabCAT, ACI, WAQTC, Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation).
  • Assist monitoring consultants performing required testing for projects.
  • Conduct inspections of construction methods, procedures, materials to confirm final construction meets specifications and standards.
  • Provide basic interpretation of plans and specifications for contractors and refer corrective actions to the project engineer.
  • Measure, calculate, and document quantities of work performed by contractors.
  • Provide office engineering support: check project pay items documentation, post quantities in database, check contractor payrolls, record manpower and equipment, monitor daily traffic control.
  • Compile information from site surveys and research to assist in creating a complete set of plans for a highway construction project.
  • Use computer‑aided drafting, earthwork, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized design programs to organize project data.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Primary schedule: 7:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday‑Friday.
  • Approximately 85% spent in the field, 15% in the office.
  • Workdays/hours may change depending on the project.
  • Night, holiday, and weekend work may be required.
  • Travel within the state to project sites, training, meetings, and conferences is expected.
  • Must operate CDOT vehicles and use personal protective equipment.
  • Work near heavy traffic.
  • Must work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, elevations up to 12,000 ft.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials – radioactivity, nuclear testing gauge.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
