About the Position

This position, located in Lamar, supports engineers in materials testing, construction inspection, and field data collection. You will be certified to perform industry‑standard testing procedures and use specialized equipment to take measurements, analyze samples, and record results. The role ensures contractors’ work complies with approved plans, specifications, and construction requirements, making it ideal for candidates with strong attention to detail and an interest in engineering and quality control.

Responsibilities
  • Sample and perform field testing of materials for assigned construction projects; collect test materials, run tests, and conduct analyses.
  • Schedule and perform materials sampling and testing at field sites to ensure materials meet contract specifications and industry standards.
  • Acquire and maintain certifications for asphalt, concrete, and soils testing (LabCAT, ACI, WAQTC, Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation).
  • Assist monitoring consultants performing necessary testing for various projects.
  • Inspect construction methods, procedures, and materials to assure the final construction product meets all specifications and standards.
  • Provide basic interpretation of plans and specifications for the contractor and refer contractor to the project engineer for corrective actions.
  • Measure, calculate, and document contractor quantities using devices, calculators, and computer programs.
  • Support office engineering tasks such as checking pay item documentation, posting quantities, monitoring payrolls, and maintaining traffic control data.
  • Compile information from site surveys and research efforts to aid in creating complete project plans.
  • Use drafting, earthwork, spreadsheet, database, and other specialized design programs for project planning.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Schedule:

    7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday–Friday.
  • Approximately 85% field, 15% office.
  • Night, holiday, and weekend work may be required.
  • Travel within the state for project sites, training, meetings, and conferences.
  • Operate CDOT vehicles and use appropriate PPE as required.
  • Work near heavy traffic and at temperatures ranging from hot to cold, with elevations up to 12,000 ft.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials such as radioactivity and nuclear testing gauge.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in building or skilled trades (welder, utilities, electrician, carpenter) or in quality control/assurance, construction design, project monitoring, materials testing, or inspection.
  • Additional engineering, construction management, or mathematics coursework may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to qualify on‑call, shift work, and maintain required certifications (LabCAT, ACI, WAQTC, Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation) within 2 years of hire.
  • Pass pre‑employment screening (background check, driver’s record, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
  • State service experience related to the duties of this position.
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity.
  • Certifications in ACI A and B, WAQTC, and CAPA.
  • Working knowledge of engineering design standards and construction project plans.
  • Experience inspecting construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Applications, SAP, Micro Station, Trns‑Port, InRoads, and ability to learn new software.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and strong technical detail and accuracy.
