Emergency Department Support Secretary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, well‑motivated person to provide administrative and secretarial support within the Emergency Department. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work within a team and use your own initiative. The successful applicant should be computer literate with an understanding of Word, Excel, Outlook, HISS and Nexus, and be able to undertake clinical transcription from digital dictation.
The role includes answering telephone calls, consultant/doctors admin, emails, post, retrieval of case notes and filing of clinical correspondence. A flexible, friendly approach is essential.
The role of the support secretary is to provide a comprehensive secretarial service to the consultants and their clinical team. It requires competence in clinical audio‑typing, data processing, information technology, communication and organisational skills, and the ability to manage and prioritise own workload without direct supervision.
About usBlackpool Victoria Hospital, or BVH, is a medium‑sized NHS District General Hospital. It forms part of the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Victoria site has around 900 beds and provides care for Acute Medicine and DGH Surgical specialties, including General Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Urology and Gynaecology. There is a Women and Children’s Unit with consultant‑led and midwife‑led maternity care.

The Support Secretary will provide administrative and secretarial services to consultants and their clinical teams within the Directorate of Emergency Access and Assessment (EAA). The post holder will work with other secretaries and provide cross‑cover during periods of staff absence.
Person Specification Education and Qualifications- Education of 5 GCSE’s grades A‑C or equivalent
- A good command of the English language
- ECDL or IT qualification
- Computer literate with experience of MS Office software
- Substantial experience of working in a clerical/secretarial/admin role
- Experience of communicating with members of the public
- Advanced IT skills with working knowledge of the Trust’s PAS and Maxims
- Medical terminology
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written at all levels within the organisation
- Previous experience working in the NHS
- Knowledge of the Blackpool Way & Foundation Trust
- Good literacy and numeracy skills
- Excellent organisational skills
- Ability to follow simple instructions and procedures
- Ability to work unsupervised
- Ability to work under pressure
- Willingness to be flexible to meet the demands of a busy department
- Self‑motivation
- Diplomatic and tactful when dealing with members of the public
- Efficient and enthusiastic
