Senior Dental Officer Band B

The provision of high‑quality routine and urgent care dentistry to service users referred to BTH Dental Services (special care and paediatric).

The provision of urgent care to service users referred to BTH Dental Services from the Lancashire Call Handling Service.

The provision of inhalation sedation and domiciliary dental care as required.

The provision of exodontia and comprehensive dental care under general anaesthetic supporting Senior Dental Officers/Specialists.

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality urgent and routine oral health care to patients attending BTH Dental Services including assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning and the full range of mandatory services in line with PDS Regulations and the current Service Specification. This includes working with and under the clinical leadership of Specialists in Paediatric Dentistry and Special Care Dentistry.

To provide urgent care to patients referred to BTH Dental Services from the Lancashire Call Handling Service.

To provide preventative advice and interventions in line with Delivering Better Oral Health (DBOH) 4th Edition.

To support the provision of exodontia and comprehensive dental care under general anaesthetic as appropriate.

To participate in national campaigns to improve oral health and reduce health inequalities.

To liaise with other professionals to ensure patients receive appropriate care and support.

The use of skill mix to ensure maximum efficiency.

To provide domiciliary care to the housebound who meet domiciliary care criteria and who cannot access mainstream general dental services.

To plan and manage care where there are complex medical co‑morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues.

BTH Dental Services offers high‑quality routine and urgent dental care for patients referred for special care and paediatric needs, as well as those directed from Lancashire Call Handling Service. Services include inhalation sedation, domiciliary care for eligible housebound patients, and support for exodontia and comprehensive dental treatments under general anaesthetic alongside senior dental staff and specialists. The team provides full oral health care covering assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and all mandatory services aligned with PDS Regulations and service specifications, working closely with specialists in paediatric and special care dentistry.

Preventative advice follows the Delivering Better Oral Health (DBOH) guidelines, and the service participates in national campaigns to improve oral health and reduce inequalities. Staff collaborate with other professionals to ensure patients receive the right care, use skill mix for efficiency, and manage complex cases involving medical co‑morbidities or multidisciplinary input.

Person Specification Education
  • Full GDC registration without restrictions
  • Performer number or eligible for inclusion on performers list without exclusions.
  • Post graduate qualification in special care or paediatric dentistry

  • Evidence of continual professional development
