Mathematics for AI in Real‑world Systems (MARS) – School of Mathematical Sciences, Lancaster University.
Location: Bailrigg, Lancaster, UK
Salary: £39,906 to £48,882 (Full time, indefinite with end date)

We are seeking Senior Research Associates to lead their own research project as part of MARS, funded by a £13 million investment from Research England. MARS focuses on dynamical mathematical modelling and artificial intelligence, addressing real‑world challenges across cyber security, engineering, environment and health.
What We’re Looking For• PhD in mathematics or a related discipline with demonstrable experience using mathematical machine learning, AI methods or applied mathematics to solve challenging problems.
• Ability to propose an innovative, deliverable three‑year research project containing substantial mathematical content, aligned with MARS objectives.
• Willingness to contribute up to 0.2 FTE to industry projects relevant to expertise.
MARS is based in one of the country’s top‑ranked mathematics departments, offering a thriving, collegial research group with academic staff, researchers and PhD students. It is a national leader in mathematics and AI research, and an ideal environment for mathematicians tackling real‑world problems.
These are full‑time, three‑year positions. Flexible working arrangements may be considered, but candidates must be present on the Lancaster campus at least two days a week.
