This SEN School, rated 'Good', is an innovative provider of education and care, supporting students aged 10 - 19 with complex needs typically related to Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism, and other conditions.

The school are currently seeking an experienced Level 1-2 SEN Teaching Assistant to join their beautiful woodland‑surrounded school in Darwen.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will support our students' learning and general well‑being, ensuring every child has the best opportunity to reach their full potential in a caring and safe environment. This may include occasional care needs and positive behaviour management tailored to individual children.

You will establish a warm, caring, and supportive relationship with pupils to help them feel safe and enjoy their learning experience. Promoting independence, personal development, and maintaining high behavioural expectations will be key aspects of your role.

Your responsibilities will include supporting the class teacher and contributing to the delivery of a high‑quality, challenging, and differentiated curriculum, enabling pupils to achieve their full potential across all learning areas.

Key Duties
  • Participate in the planning and evaluation of learning activities.
  • Provide meaningful feedback on pupil attainment and progress.
  • Support the teacher in monitoring, assessing, recording, and reporting pupils’ progress according to school policies.
  • Support positive behaviour and concentration levels, adapting your behaviour in response to changes or escalations.
  • Promote spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development and British values within the PSHE policy.
  • Enhance pupils’ cognitive, social, emotional, behavioural, physical development, and spiritual well‑being through a comprehensive curriculum.
  • In a dynamic SEN environment, duties may vary, requiring flexibility and a willingness to assist wherever needed.
Responsibilities

Skills and Qualifications

Successful candidates are likely to demonstrate:

  • Experience working with SEN in an employed or voluntary setting.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a car are essential, as carpooling students to and from school is required on a rota basis.
  • A recognised qualification at Level 2 or above in Support Work for Teaching and Learning in Schools or an equivalent is desirable.
  • GCSE Maths and English Level 2 / C or above qualification is essential.
  • Understanding of Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures.
  • Knowledge or experience of working with pupils with SEN, SEMH, or ASD.
  • A commitment to putting the child first and treating them as an individual.
  • A positive and creative approach to meeting pupils’ individual needs.
