Job Summary

Working on both projects small and large and bid proposals, the Automation Engineer is responsible for the execution of automation systems, or parts thereof.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Developing an automation solution which meets the requirements of the proposal or project.
  • Ensuring design and execution outputs are delivered in line with the time schedule and quality requirements.
  • Providing technical support regarding automation design aspects throughout project and bid life cycles.
  • Undertaking other technical tasks as required (e.g. site surveys, feasibility studies, support to sales, etc).
  • Providing aftermarket support for customers with participation in 24/7 support up to 1 week per month (possible travel).
  • Additional language skills preferable.
  • Safety & Environment
    • Ensure that automation solutions are safe.
    • Ensure that e‑stop, isolation & maintenance aspects of solutions have been considered appropriately.
    • Participate in relevant reviews (Design Reviews, Risk Assessments) and ensure completion of resultant actions.
    • Ensure compliance with local legislation and regulations (e.g. EU Machinery Directive).
    • Act safely, particularly when operating outside the known office environment.
  • Automation Design & Execution Tasks
    • Generate automation solutions and define/implement characteristics (architecture diagrams, hardware/software selection, control philosophy, software structure).
    • Create functional and detailed design specifications (FDS, DDS).
    • Write PLC software code and configure networks, HMI, SCADA, and interfaces with MIS/MES/ERP systems.
    • Perform design calculations, software simulation, FAT, CAT.
    • Ensure tasks are completed on schedule, quality, and within budget.
    • Maintain S88‑based software structures and ensure coherent integration of all scope elements.
    • Support other disciplines (Supply Chain, Process, Electrical) to achieve deliverables.
    • Assist Installation & Commissioning team (design intent communication, commissioning activities, automation snags resolution, hand‑over to aftermarket).
    • Document all design information, prepare user and maintenance manuals, compile technical files.
    • Assist in proposals (pre‑contract studies, technical aspects of quotation).
  • Communication & Team Working
    • Engage in technical discussions with customers and suppliers.
    • Attend project/proposal meetings (launch/kick‑off, progress reviews, design reviews).
    • Communicate information to stakeholders timely.
    • Support other disciplines during design.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Fluent English – both spoken and written.
  • Additional languages an advantage.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a matrix environment.
  • Build relationships with colleagues across functions and sites.
  • Strong analytical/problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Maintain high performance standards with ethics and integrity.
  • Experience with Studio
    5000 (Rockwell).
  • Experience with Siemens Simatic

    NET and TIA Portal.
  • Proficiency with Wonderware InTouch.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Experience with C++, C#, Visual Studio (advantage).
  • SQL Server experience (advantage).
Required

Education and Experience
  • Degree level qualification in an appropriate engineering discipline (e.g. Electrical).
  • Automation execution experience in food, beverage, pharmaceutical or other hygienic industries.
  • Understanding of control requirements for common hygienic processes (e.g. pasteurization, CIP) beneficial.
  • Experience working within, and leading, a technically oriented team.
  • Good competence in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge and experience of Siemens and Rockwell programming environments (S7, TIA Portal, Control Logix).
  • Experience with Wonderware SCADA and associated products (InTouch) beneficial.
  • SAP experience beneficial.
