Overview
Decontamination Technicians work within the Hospital Decontamination Hub at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital (RBTH), covering the Hospital Sterilization and Disinfection Unit (HSDU), Endoscopy Decontamination, and the Laundry Department. They provide sterile surgical instruments, scopes, surgical supplies and clean linen for the Trust’s wards, departments, operating theatres and external providers.
Responsibilities- Receive, clean, disinfect and pack reusable surgical instruments, medical devices and procedure packs in the HSDU.
- Process endoscopes through receipt, pre‑clean, decontamination and packing.
- Operate industrial machinery to wash, dry, press and fold hospital linen in the Laundry and Sterile Linen Unit.
- Inspect, fold and pack sterile gowns, drapes and wraps in a Clean Room.
- Work individually and as part of a team; comply with quality management system, standard procedures and safety legislation.
- Support cross‑site activities to meet service demands.
- Level 2, GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English.
- Basic IT skills.
- Evidence of completing further training or education.
- Compliance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and DBS requirements.
- NVQ in Customer Care or equivalent in Sterile Services/Endoscopy.
- Experience in a factory, packing or cleaning role.
- Experience in a healthcare environment.
- Ability to understand and carry out detailed work procedures, count, record numbers and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and safe working practices.
Salary is advertised for a full‑time role (37.5 hours). For part‑time positions the rate will be pro‑rated. New NHS entrants will normally start on the first pay point of the relevant band.
Disclosures and ChecksThe role is controlled activity; a satisfactory DBS check is required before formal offer. Candidates may undertake the check on their own or have the Trust cover the cost, which will be recovered from salary. Enhanced Disclosure costs £55.38, Standard £27.38.
