Please note on 1st March 2026, the Estates and Facilities Services for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will transfer to East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and become part of OneLSC.

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic, and hardworking Supervisor to join our Portering team here at Lancashire Teaching Hospital Trust.

You will work as part of a team contributing to the smooth running of the department. You will direct, support, and supervise Portering colleagues through a range of duties to deliver an efficient and effective service to all patients, visitors, and colleagues.

It is a busy and active role and extremely satisfying and fulfilling. We are a 24/7, 365 days a year service, completing up to 15,000 tasks a month. You will join a dedicated and professional Portering team that works hard together to deliver a service that we are extremely proud of.

Work Pattern

1 x 37.5 hours per week on a rotational pattern including weekends.

You will work as part of a team contributing to the smooth running of the service, providing an efficient and effective response to requests for patient movement, assistance in emergency situations, collection and delivery of samples and medicines etc, using an electronic Portering Management system whilst ensuring that other tasks are carried out in a timely manner. Whilst many of the tasks are generally routine the daily functioning of the service may be unpredictable therefore a flexible approach is essential, and the post holder will be expected to use own initiative.

As a Portering Supervisor you must be mobile and liaise and communicate with your team, colleagues, and other departments.

You will be involved in the completion of staff rotas, carry out staff appraisals and training whilst supervising the Portering workforce including delegation of work and prioritise.

The Portering Supervisor is a very important element of the department, and you will work alongside your team, leading by example, always acting in a manner that upholds the Trust’s values and working as part of a team to ensure efficiency and excellent customer care.

You will be required, to adhere to departmental and Trust standards in relation to Infection Control and Information Governance.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Communicate verbally with Portering Services Managers and staff by phone, radio and through written procedures, ensuring an effective exchange of information regarding Portering tasks and service needs.
  • Communicate with a range of clinical and non-clinical staff, patients, contractors, and visitors to understand service needs, limitations, and information Governance requirements, in dispatching information beyond the organisation's control on both sites.
  • Carry out staff appraisals, training, team briefs and Return to Work interviews.
  • Update appraisal plan, appraisal register and Training needs analysis.
  • Maintain staff attendance records, highlighting and discussing areas of concern with departmental managers.
  • Assist and support in the recruitment process.
  • Ensure staff rotas, absence from work and annual leave requests are completed accurately and within a timely manner.
  • Carry out Quality Audits of Portering standards across all wards and departments within the Trust.
  • Identify non‑compliance and ensure rectifications are completed within a timely manner.
  • Ensure Portering Services staff adhere to cleaning, Infection Control and Health and Safety procedures during the cleaning process.
  • Provide staff initial and refresher training. Carry out regular audits of staff training.
  • Compile data reports on department training completed, planned, and actions required addressing areas of concern.
  • Conduct department induction.
  • Assist with Security incidents, liaising with ward/department staff in relation to security incidents.
  • Update work procedures with agreed changes, ensuring staff are aware of changes to an area.
  • Identify and report all equipment defects.
  • Identify and report any potential risks within the working environment e.g., pest sightings or building environment faults.
  • Follow policies and procedures in relation to building security and access.
  • Pro‑actively support the continued improvement of the Portering Services.
  • Maintain and develop own competence for the Portering Supervisor role.
  • Supporting, mentoring, and coaching new Porters.
  • Raise requisitions and receipt goods in ensuring compliance with Trust Standing Financial Instructions.
