Internal vacancy - NHS Staff. Are you a registered nurse either band 5 or 6 with a minimum of 3 years experience in surgery? This full‑time band 6 role works between the Nurse‑Led 24‑bed Day Case Unit and the Surgical Pre‑Op Admissions unit. The role requires punctuality, flexibility and commitment with a determination to ensure patients on the ward receive the highest standards of care.

The candidate will be enthusiastic, forward‑thinking and capable of managing a dynamic team.

Main duties

General duties include supporting the Ward Manager and deputising in their absence, managing Healthroster amendments, sickness and absence, conducting monthly audits, ensuring action plans are addressed, staff appraisals, mandatory and medical device training, and maintaining green compliance. The role also coordinates the DSU, Surgical Pre‑Op Admissions, DSU escalation ward, recovery, and nurse‑led discharges, ensuring safe, personal and effective nursing care.

    • Assist trained staff to carry out nursing care ensuring the patients' confidentiality and privacy are maintained.

    • Ensure patients' safety, comfort, and welfare at all times.
    • Report accidents, incidents, losses as they occur to the nurse in charge.
    • Attend yearly updates on all statutory training, including basic life support and manual handling and moving.
    • Comply with all relevant policies, procedures and training on infection prevention and control.
  • Minimise the Risks Arising from Health Emergencies
    • Report untoward incidents and occurrences regarding changes in patients' condition to the nurse in charge or named nurse as they arise.
    • Assist in emergency care once training is undertaken.
  • Develop Relationships with People that value them as Individuals
    • Liaise with nursing, medical, and other disciplines within our defined clinical area and other departments and hospitals.
    • Be supportive to the patient and their family/carers at all times.
  • Receive and Transmit Information
    • Ensure teamwork reports are completed and details entered onto the computer.
    • Admit and discharge patients via the computer.
    • Arrange waiting list admissions and participate in transfer and discharge arrangements for patients.
  • Store and Retrieve Records
    • Maintain accurate registers and bed states.
    • Ensure patients' notes are filed and up to date.
    • Ensure pathology results, X‑Rays, reports are available and filed as necessary.
  • Enable Patients to Maintain their Interests, Identity and Emotional Well‑being whilst Receiving a Care Service
    • Anticipate and act on the physical and psychological needs of the patient and meet the same.
    • Provide a relaxed and professional environment conducive to promoting the well‑being of the patient.
  • Contribute to the Effective Communication where there are Communication Differences
    • Provide effective working relationships with patients, relatives, carers, nursing team, medical and multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Report any complaints to the nurse in charge immediately.
  • Develop in the Work Role
    • Attend in‑service training, study days, seminars, courses as rostered.
    • Attend a yearly IPR/Appraisal to set objectives and Personal Development Plan for the following twelve months with clinical leader.
    • Attend/undertake leadership and management courses.
Person Specification
  • NMC Registered Nurse (1st Level)
  • Diploma
  • Teaching & assessing qualification

Experience & knowledge
  • Substantial post‑registration experience within an Acute NHS Trust
