Staff Nurse – Ward 1, Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated registered or newly qualified nurse to join our highly skilled, innovative and rapidly expanding Frailty service based at Southport Hospital. Ward1 is a low‑acuity 12‑bedded ward providing care and intervention to patients nearing the end of their hospital stay. This full‑time on‑site position offers great opportunities for career growth and you will receive training and support for the right candidate who has an interest in elderly care and frailty.

• Assess, plan, develop and implement programmes of care to patients, providing advice in a variety of settings.
• Carry out nursing procedures in line with current NMC standards of proficiency.
• Ensure the health, wellbeing and independence of patients and service users across healthcare settings, maintaining associated records and ensuring safe and effective care at all times.
• Supervise junior staff and all learners.
• Understand and demonstrate the Trust values at all times.
• Plan and organise a defined caseload of patients on a continuing basis.
• Recognise signs of deterioration or change and respond according to protocol.
• Maintain safe custody of drugs, ensuring checking, witnessing and administration procedures meet statutory and Trust requirements.
• Respond to complaints or concerns and, where appropriate, escalated.
• Manage clinical incidents and near‑misses, report and escalated in a timely manner.
• Act when required as the patient’s advocate and support the patient’s pathway.
• Work within organisational policy, standard operating procedures and guidelines.
• Undertake risk assessments and implement risk‑reducing measures, reporting deficiencies to the line manager.
• Maintain privacy, dignity and safety of individuals at all times.
• Participate in the effective and efficient use of ward and departmental resources, including stock management and equipment maintenance.
• Sign off agency timesheets and liaise with the Roster Coordinator to balance personal roster.
• Order and receive goods in accordance with the Trust’s financial framework.
• Deputise in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse and manage own time and that of others through delegation.
• Act as assessor or supervisor for junior staff and students, support the appraisal process, provide feedback.
• Contribute to research and audit by collecting data, identifying audit topics and evaluating research for clinical practice.
• Develop personal professional objectives, maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary for revalidation.
• Promote self‑help and wellbeing, build a culture of learning and innovation.

• Registered nurse with a current Nursing and Midwifery Council registration.
• Enhanced DBS Certificate with the Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists.
