Physics Instructor – Full‑time Faculty – Inside Higher Ed
We are seeking a dynamic, tenure‑track instructor to join our Math, Science, and Engineering Division. The position is a 10‑month classroom teaching assignment based on the academic calendar of Antelope Valley Community College.
Responsibilities- Teach fifteen lecture‑hour equivalents per semester, using demonstrations, active learning strategies, and other evidence‑based practices.
- Maintain five weekly office hours (including posted, regular hours) and provide timely support to students.
- Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments in a timely manner.
- Participate in faculty, division, and program meetings; yearly curriculum reviews; and college governance activities that advance institutional mission and strategic goals.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain currency in physics, pedagogy (traditional and online), and student support, including equity initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, census, grades, and other required documentation.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written format with students and colleagues.
- Build cooperative working relationships with staff and stakeholders across the district.
- Support the highest standards of student equity, recognizing diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Travel between district locations as required.
- Use a learning management system (LMS) to support course delivery.
- Assume additional instructional duties as assigned.
- Master's degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics OR a Bachelor's degree in physics or astronomy AND a Master's degree in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics OR the equivalent.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse backgrounds of community college students (California Workforce Development Act, Section 53024.1).
- Recent experience teaching lecture and lab courses to historically underrepresented populations.
- Knowledge and experience working with students underrepresented in higher education, aiming to reduce equity gaps.
- Teaching experience reflecting culturally responsive practices.
- Ability to develop or implement research projects for science majors or degree programs.
- Experience designing and implementing physics or engineering courses that emphasize hands‑on, project‑based learning.
- Commitment to inquiry‑based methods and/or desire to participate in undergraduate research.
- Willingness to engage in outreach beyond the classroom.
- Professional background in astronomy at the community college level.
- Demonstrated use of student‑engagement techniques (active learning, supportive interventions, positive student relations).
