Coating Inspector – Lancaster, CA
Duration: up to 1 month (minimum 2 weeks).
Position Overview:
The Coating Inspector (NACE Level II) provides quality assurance inspection services for protective coating systems on public works infrastructure projects.
The scope includes construction of a replacement well, installation of approximately 1,000 ft of pipe, and electrical upgrades. There will also be above‑ground piping that will require coating.
Minimum Qualifications- NACE Coating Inspector Level II Certification (current and in good standing)
- Minimum 10 years of experience inspecting industrial or public works coating systems
- Demonstrated experience with SSPC, NACE, ASTM, and manufacturer coating standards
- Experience on public agency or municipal infrastructure projects (LACDPW preferred)
- Proficiency in inspection instruments (DFT gauges, psychrometers, adhesion testers, holiday detectors)
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and defensible inspection documentation
- Experience on Los Angeles County or other California public works projects
- Familiarity with potable water coatings and NSF/ANSI 61 requirements (if applicable)
- Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders
- Inspect surface preparation activities including abrasive blasting, power tool cleaning, and chemical cleaning in accordance with SSPC/NACE standards
- Verify coating materials, application methods, environmental conditions, and curing processes meet project specifications
- Monitor and document ambient conditions (temperature, humidity, dew point) before and during coating operations
- Perform and document dry film thickness (DFT), wet film thickness (WFT), adhesion testing, and holiday detection as required
- Verify proper storage, mixing, and handling of coating materials
- Identify nonconforming work, document deficiencies, and coordinate corrective actions with contractors and project teams
- Review coating submittals, product data sheets, and manufacturer recommendations for compliance
- Prepare detailed daily inspection reports, logs, and photographic documentation
- Coordinate with Resident Engineers, Construction Managers, and County staff to ensure quality control and schedule compliance
- Ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA safety requirements and project‑specific safety plans
