Job Objective: Under the direction of the Clinical Coordinator, Assistant Director and Director of Pharmacy Services, the Clinical Pharmacist Specialist Pain Management shall: a) provide clinical pharmacy services, including primary and consultative services, to patients and health care providers to ensure optimal drug utilization in all areas, b) assist in the planning and development of clinical pharmacy activities related to pain management and opioid use, c) provide leadership and mentoring for clinical staff to help ensure excellence in clinical pharmacy d) participate in clinical research, oversee and/or participate in the preparation and dispensing of medications, and e) provide education and training to pharmacy students, medical staff physicians and nurses, and healthcare-related professionals.
The Clinical Pharmacist Specialist Pain Management will not perform these objectives in an assigned specialty area but will instead work in all areas where pain medications (particularly opioids) are used.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs all duties and functions of a Clinical Pharmacist in compliance with all California and Federal pharmacy laws and regulations.
- Oversee the activities of pharmacy technicians and interns
- Assists in the orientation and training of departmental personnel in assigned specialty areas as well as other assigned areas of the department.
- Precepts pharmacy residents, pharmacy graduates, and students from accredited Colleges of Pharmacy in clinical clerkship experiences
- Maintains professional work habits by organizing workload, setting priorities, completing assignments in a timely manner, utilizing resources appropriately, complying with department program standards and adapting well to change
- Obtains medication history, maintains and monitors medication profiles
- Assists with drug formulary management and dissemination of drug information throughout the institution
- Provides primary care and consultative services to patients and health care providers in assigned specialty area(s) to ensure optimal drug therapy
- Reviews medication orders to ensure accurate, rational, and cost-effective drug therapy; this includes choice of appropriate drug, indication, route, duration and rate of administration
- Assesses patient’s drug therapy; performs pharmacokinetic analysis with appropriate adjustments in dosing, and identifies monitoring parameters and therapeutic outcomes in consultation with the patients
- Develop programs designed to increase pharmacists’ involvement in the promotion of rational drug therapy in the Medical Center; such programs may include pharmacist-regulated drug monitoring protocols, regularly scheduled in-services for Medical Center staff on various drug therapy topics, and improved monitoring and interventions in drug therapy
- Participates in the development and production of protocols/guidelines, policies and procedures, and other staff development programs for pharmacy or other health care providers
- Participates in quality focus reviews, adverse drug reaction (ADR) activities, and in the planning, implementation and evaluation of other programs designated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee or Pain Management Committee
- Participate in appropriate committees
- Maintains clinical expertise through consistent literature review, attendance in appropriate seminars, and active membership in state or national pharmacy organizations
- Participates in on-going clinical research projects and other scholarly activities as appropriate; prepares reports or materials for publication
