RN Break Nurse Addendum

Job Objective: The RN Break Nurse is responsible for nursing care of patients as established by the Nursing Practice Act of the Board of Registered Nursing of the State of California and as guided by hospital policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Arrive at the assigned unit prepared to work for the scheduled shift.
  • Obtain a copy of the completed Lunch Breaks Schedule from the Charge Nurse (CN) or a designee.
  • Introduce yourself and inform Primary Care Nurses (PCNs) of your role as Break Nurse (BN).
  • Receive a brief 3‑5 minute report, accept the PCN’s phone, and assume care of the patients on your assignment.
  • Assume full responsibility for patients during the PCN’s break and provide necessary care, including ADLs, assistance in procedures, patient transfers, and communication with physicians, families, and team members.
  • Review all orders in the electronic medical record and complete any tasks that are due.
  • Document break relief in the staff management system.
  • If no nurse is available to break, inform the Charge Nurse and House Supervisor; you may stay in the assigned department as a Resource Nurse unless redirected.
  • Only perform break nursing during PCN meal break periods unless redirected or approved by the unit Manager or HS; any role change must be reported to the Staffing Office and documented.
  • Notify the Charge Nurse immediately if problems arise with providing breaks at the assigned times.
  • If a PCN doesn’t return on time for their break, notify the Charge Nurse or designee and provide a handoff report before relieving the next nurse to avoid disruption.
Non‑Essential Duties
  • Other duties as assigned in compliance with Title 22, The Joint Commission, and CMS.

Education and Experience
  • National certifications are desirable.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in an acute care setting.
Required Licensure and/or Certifications
  • Registered Nurse.
  • BCLS required.
  • ACLS, NRP, and PALS certifications may be required, depending on practice area.

  • Adhere to AVH Absenteeism, Tardiness, Leaves of Absence, Paid Time Off, and Recording of Hours Worked Policies.
  • Follow the department dress code.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and department information.

  • Support AVH Standards of Excellence and the Compliance & Integrity Program.
  • Communicate effectively with co‑workers, managers, and hospital staff.
  • Participate effectively in department and hospital staff education.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • May be required to take call shifts per department policy.
  • Mandatory weekend and holiday rotations.
