Overview

Under limited supervision, this 24 HR Shift work position supervises and performs firefighting and fire prevention activities on assigned shift. Responds to emergency situations as required, providing assistance to superiors in controlling fire scenes or performing other specialized duties as assigned. Performs the necessary functions and operations to efficiently and effectively protect the lives and property of those in need of assistance.

Supervises subordinates through the chain of command. Reports to the Fire Rescue Operations Battalion Chief or Deputy Director and Lancaster County Fire Rescue Director.

Responsibilities
  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies within McDonald Green Fire Department’s fire district and in other districts with automatic mutual aid and as assigned with shift duties from McDonald Green Fire Station or when requested by proper authorities to respond within the county or other areas; takes full command of scene until relieved by a higher ranking officer.
  • Performs supervisory and technical firefighting and fire prevention work on assigned shift.
  • Assists the Operations Battalion Chief or Lancaster County Fire Rescue Director/Deputy Director in the total operations of the Fire Department and other county functions as assigned with response and duty protocols.
  • Supervises subordinate personnel through the chain of command; supervis"ory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; assisting in the selection of new employees; acting on employee problems; and recommending employee discipline, transfers, promotions and discharge.
  • Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.
  • Ensures all equipment and apparatus are kept in proper and safe condition; implements corrective action for equipment in need of repair or maintenance; sees that all proper testing is implemented and corresponding records maintained.
  • Ensures subordinate personnel are trained in required courses and maintain continuing education credits as needed. Is trained as, and ensures that personnel are trained as efficient safe firefighters and all necessary training for new hires is in effect at designated times if applicable as well as all are trained as Medical First Responders with necessary annual updates. Assists the training officer with notification of needed training and coordination of training as required.
  • Operates and maintains an assortment of equipment and hand tools used in fire service such as vehicles, fire trucks, aerial towers, pumpers, fire suppression equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, special protective clothing, radio equipment, generators, fire extinguishers, ladders, certain chemicals used in fighting fires, hand and power tools, etc. Effectively uses computers, and all information technology related equipment as needed.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Volunteer Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, Battalion Chief, co-workers, subordinates, other county employees, volunteers, fire personnel of other jurisdictions, South Carolina civic and community organizations, business/property owners, medical/hospital personnel, and the general public.
  • Every manager/supervisor is responsible for enforcing all safety rules and regulations. In addition, he or she is responsible for ensuring that a safe work environment is maintained, safe work practices are followed and employees are properly trained.
  • It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injuries or illnesses immediately or when it’s safe to do so.
Qualifications
  • You must have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent. You must submit a certified fire service certification transcript.
  • You must have ICS: 100, 200, 300, 700 and 800.
  • You must have NFPA Firefighter level II and Hazardous Materials Operations or equivalent as well as Hazardous Materials Technician within the first year and two 16 hours South Carloina Fire Academy Officer classes, or within two years of your hired or promoted date.
  • You must have three years of certified interior firefighter and two years at the rank of engineer or equivalent education and experience.
  • You must have Lancaster County First Responder, EMT or equivalent within the first twelve months.
  • You must be legally and physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a fire engine, vehicles, firefighting equipment, computer, basic office equipment, telephone/radio or other…
