English Teacher / ESL TEFL, Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional
A well-regarded 11–18 secondary school serving the Lancaster area is seeking a committed and thoughtful Teacher of English to join its established department from January 2026. This is a school with a strong academic identity, a calm and purposeful culture, and a genuine belief in the power of language and literature to shape confident, articulate young people.
Why This Role Stands OutThis is not a high-turnover department or a short-term appointment. The English team is stable, experienced and well led, with a shared vision built around depth of understanding, strong reading habits and confident extended writing. Teachers here value doing things well rather than doing everything at once.
The department has recently refined its curriculum to:
Prioritise powerful, challenging texts across KS3
Build clear progression in analytical writing
Embed literacy routines consistently across year groups
Reduce unnecessary assessment in favour of meaningful feedback
There is a strong emphasis on teaching pupils how to think, argue and write — not simply how to pass exams.
The Role in PracticeYou will teach English across KS3 and KS4, with KS5 teaching available depending on experience. Lessons are carefully planned but not overly scripted, giving teachers professional freedom while maintaining consistency across the department.
Key responsibilities include:
Delivering engaging, well-structured English lessons
Supporting pupils to develop confidence in reading and writing
Using assessment to inform teaching rather than drive workload
Contributing to curriculum development and shared planning
Enrichment is purposeful and realistic. The department runs:
Reading and writing groups aligned to curriculum content
Theatre visits linked directly to exam texts
Whole-school literacy initiatives supported by leadership
Rated Good, the school is known locally for excellent behaviour, strong pastoral systems and a respectful learning environment. Classrooms are calm, expectations are clear, and leadership support is visible and consistent.
Staff value:Clear communication from senior leaders
A genuine commitment to workload balance
Regular, high-quality CPD shaped by staff voice
A professional culture built on trust rather than micromanagement
This role would suit an English teacher who values collaboration, academic rigour and working in a school where teaching is taken seriously.
