Summary

Provide engineered solutions that meet the customer’s (internal or external) technical, schedule and budget objectives. This person does this by serving as the lead engineering group organizer and is responsible for coordinating, directing, and exercising functional authority for completion of engineering projects within the area of assigned responsibility by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Engineering Responsibilities (75% Time)

This is a working engineering position. The director is required to continue to do the essential duties and responsibilities of a Senior Engineer.

Group Responsibilities (about 15% Time)
  • Directs and Coordinates

    Activities:

    Boyd Lancaster Engineering is run as a Profit/Loss (P&L) Organization. Manages assigned engineering personnel to ensure that projects are completed profitably by developing project plans, specifying goals, addressing staffing, establishing schedules, identifying risks and their mitigation, developing contingency plans, and allocating available resources.
  • Interfaces with Management: Consults with management and reviews project status to determine goals, time frame, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, allotment of resources and prepares budget information.
  • Delivery Schedules: Ensures that the delivery dates to our customers are met. Deliverables include hardware, reports, technical data, proposals, etc. If delivery dates are in jeopardy of falling behind (i.e., not On‑Time), notify Senior Management immediately to ensure resources are properly applied to project and schedule is restored.
  • Quality: Ensures prototype/pre‑production units fabricated in their engineering group meet customer and quality specifications/expectations. This will require coordination with quality personnel within the Quality Department.
  • Customer Communication: Ensures customer is notified of any technical or delivery changes/problems immediately upon discovery. Communication with customers should be coordinated with proper Sales and Customer Service personnel.
  • Project Budgets: Responsible for ensuring each project meets the targeted cost budget.
  • Sales Support: Assures that the group supports sales through proposal writing, conducting analysis, and generating solutions to customers’ requirements; writing and presenting technical papers, technical articles, datasheets, customer visits and preparing cost/bid support information.
  • Intellectual Property: Actively monitors and maintains control of company‑related intellectual property, trade secrets and patents. Assures that all new inventions for the group are documented in an Invention Disclosure, IDI, Form and submitted to the patent committee.
Hiring/Mentoring/Training

Responsibilities include hiring and then training and mentoring other engineers and technicians; planning, assigning, and directing work; tracking and administering annual PTO schedules, assessing performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Business Acumen

The Director will help Senior Management in understanding and dealing with technical and/or business situations in a manner that is likely to lead to a good outcome. This experience with business aspects will be used as a tool for improving financial performance and leadership development within Thermacore.

Qualifications

Education and/or

Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or similar) from an accredited four‑year college or university program with ten or more years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
