Overview

An exciting post‑doctoral researcher position in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Lancaster University. The role involves experimental research on the ductile fragmentation of low‑viscosity volcanic melts and magmas as part of the UKRI FLF project “Flow and fragmentation of melts and magmas”. The researcher will work within Dr. Thomas Jones’ group and collaborate with an international team.

Key responsibilities
  • Carry out analogue material experiments to investigate ductile fragmentation of volcanic melts.
  • Record experiments using high‑speed videography and perform image analysis.
  • Conduct complementary rheological experiments (extension, rotation, oscillation).
  • Analyze experimental data and contribute to the project’s experimental objectives.
  • Collaborate with international researchers from Canada, USA, and Italy.
  • Assist in the development of project deliverables and scientific publications.
Qualifications
  • PhD or equivalent research experience in volcano logy, geophysics, or a related field.
  • Background in laboratory experimental work and experience using analogue materials.
  • Familiarity with high‑speed videography, rheometry, and image analysis techniques.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
