Summary The faculty member will develop and maintain an active research program. The faculty member will support his/her research primarily through extramural grants and publish original research reports in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The faculty member will recruit and appropriately mentor research personnel within his/her research program. The faculty member will actively and collegially participate in the CCSG programs and the Moffitt Research Institute activities.

The Independent Scientist Pathway is intended for tenure-track individuals who dedicate most of their effort to independent research. A portion of their effort is dedicated to educating future investigators, by teaching graduate students and medical students, and supervising postdoctoral fellows. These individuals will have their primary appointment in a Basic Science or Population Science department. They may have a secondary appointment in a Clinical Science department.

Full-time Advance the future of cancer drug discovery through innovative chemistry at Moffitt Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Department of Drug Discovery is seeking a collaborative synthetic organic chemist to build an independent research program and help translate bold scientific ideas into meaningful impact.

The Ideal Candidate :

You are an innovative synthetic organic chemist with a strong record in modern synthetic methodology, total synthesis, or a related area. You bring high-quality publications, expertise in complex synthetic route design and contemporary analytical techniques, and the potential to develop a nationally competitive, externally funded research program. You are also excited to mentor trainees, collaborate across disciplines, and foster an inclusive and supportive scientific environment.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will:

Build and lead an independent, externally funded research program that complements the Department’s strengths in chemistry and translational drug discovery.

Develop research that connects synthetic organic chemistry, including method development or total synthesis, with applications in medicinal chemistry.

Collaborate with cancer biologists, pharmacologists, and clinicians on interdisciplinary drug discovery initiatives.

Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other trainees in a highly collaborative environment.

Contribute to chemistry-focused teaching aligned with departmental and institutional needs.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field.

Postdoctoral experience in synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a related discipline.

Demonstrated record of research excellence and strong publication history.

Potential to secure competitive external funding.
