The Park Maintenance Technician at South Pass City State Historic Site plays a key role in preserving and maintaining one of Wyoming’s most distinctive heritage properties. South Pass City is a 19th‑century gold mining town turned historic landmark, featuring 45 historic and non‑historic structures across 389 acres of rugged, high‑altitude terrain.

This position requires a motivated, resourceful, and skilled individual who can balance historic preservation with modern facility management. The work is diverse, ranging from hands‑on restoration and trail maintenance to water system operations and public engagement. Candidates should enjoy working outdoors in a remote environment and take pride in maintaining sites of historical significance.

Facility & Grounds Maintenance
  • Maintain and repair 45 buildings, 4.5 miles of trails, and 3 miles of roads.
  • Oversee upkeep of a small public water and sewer system, including water testing, treatment, and septic maintenance.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections and perform janitorial duties for public restrooms.
  • Operate and service equipment ranging from small engines to tractors.
  • Maintain 6 miles of perimeter fencing and 10 acres of lawn; perform vegetation control and forestry tasks.
Historic Preservation & Construction
  • Perform restoration and maintenance on historic and modern buildings using appropriate traditional techniques and materials.
  • Conduct log, stone, masonry, roofing, and structural repairs.
  • Estimate materials and costs, coordinate projects, and ensure quality craftsmanship consistent with preservation standards.
Planning & Budgeting
  • Assist site management in developing and scheduling maintenance and restoration projects.
  • Prepare cost estimates, identify material needs, and provide budget input for upcoming work.
  • Track resources and ensure efficient use of state funds and materials.
Public Engagement
  • Support public programming by leading site tours and demonstrating historic building or mining techniques.
  • Share accurate historical information about South Pass City, including the Carissa Mill, Flood & Hindle Mining Trail, and townsite.
  • Represent Wyoming State Parks with professionalism and commitment to public service.
Preferences
  • Work experience with water and wastewater systems.
  • Prior work on historic structures or cultural resource sites.
  • Experience with project planning, budgeting, and material sourcing.
Knowledge
  • Skilled in multiple trades such as carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repair.
  • Familiarity with historic preservation methods and appropriate materials.
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy and light equipment.
  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Capable of working independently in a remote environment under variable weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associate’s Degree

Experience: 0–1 year of progressive work experience typically in parks maintenance.

OR 2–4 years of progressive work experience typically in parks maintenance.

Physical Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in an outdoor environment at high elevation and variable weather conditions.
  • Requires physical stamina to lift, carry, and operate tools and materials.
  • Some weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required during visitor season.

  • Housing can be provided. There is a $100 per month fee which is used for future updates/repairs.
