The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Lander, Wyoming. This is a full-time, entry-level position.

In this role, you will work under direct supervision to perform a variety of maintenance and repair functions on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include diesel and gasoline engine overhauls, tune-ups, brake and steering system repairs, transmission work, and hydraulic system maintenance. This position provides a strong foundation for developing your mechanical expertise while supporting Wyoming’s critical transportation operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Conducts a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment, along with other self-propelled or towed equipment.
  • Performs safety inspections on all types of automotive and diesel equipment.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems with vehicles and equipment.
  • Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.
  • Creates repair orders.
  • Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies.
  • Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS

Preference will be given to applicants who have completed any equipment certification exams.

  • Welder Certification card for FH & V Fillet and FH & V Grove 3/4" welds is a plus.
  • Agency requires the successful applicant to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License.
  • Must pass a series of seven fundamental tests, including Electricity, Engines, Hydraulics, Power Trains, Administrative Procedures, Rigging, and General Shop.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and its parts (i.e., hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).
  • Knowledge of grease and oil specifications.
  • Knowledge of general servicing of equipment.
  • Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience Substitution: 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL

Education: Associate's Degree

Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain a CDL

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Individuals must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving the call.
