The paver operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of asphalt paving equipment to place, spread, and finish asphalt and civil construction projects. This role ensures consistent material flow, proper grade and depth, and high‑quality surface finishes while working closely with the civil crew to meet production and safety targets. The role demands precision, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols to effectively contribute to the project's success.

Responsibilities

Operate an asphalt paver to lay material to specified grade, width, and thickness

Adjust screed settings for speed, hopper flow, conveyor/auger control, paver speed, truck exchange, material flow, mat quality, segregation, joints, and surface irregularities to ensure smooth, even placement

Communicate with truck drivers and crew to maintain continuous paving operations

Use and follow grade stakes, string line, markings, sensors, or other grade control references

Preheat the screed, monitor asphalt temperature, and maintain consistency of the surface quality during placement

Coordinate truck dumping operations and align paver with material supply

Coordinate with roller operators to support proper rolling patterns and compaction timing

Assist in site preparation with handwork (raking, shoveling, lute work) as required

Collaborate with ground personnel and other operators to ensure safe and efficient task completion

Be flexible utility operator who may assist with other equipment and crew tasks as needed

Perform daily pre‑trip inspections and maintenance checks on equipment and report any defects or needed repairs to the supervisor

Complete daily hazard assessments and identify controls

Follow proper start‑up and shutdown procedures, end‑of‑shift cleanout, removing asphalt build‑up, and assist with screed extensions when required

Work in physically demanding outdoor work conditions, being exposed to weather conditions, hot asphalt, noise, vibration, climbing, bending, standing, and handwork such as raking or shoveling when needed

Qualifications

2–3+ years experience operating asphalt pavers or similar heavy equipment. Experience operating Blaw‑Knox paver and placing CSB pavers is considered an asset

Ability to operate skid steer, loader, grader, water truck and sweeper is considered an asset

Experience working on road building, highway, or municipal paving crews

Valid Class 5 driver’s license (minimum); higher classes considered an asset

Ability to read grade stakes, follow site plans, and meet project specifications

Strong knowledge of paving operations, materials, and safety practices

Technical Skills

Proficient in operating asphalt pavers, rollers, and related paving equipment with precision, efficiency, and safety

Ability to control screed width, crown, and depth for accurate grade control

Strong understanding of asphalt mix properties, temperature, and paving techniques

Equipment inspection, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting skills

Ability to interpret blueprints, grade stakes, and site specifications

Knowledge of safe work procedures, hazard identification, and equipment safety standards

Strong coordination, spatial awareness, and machine control

Ability to work effectively within a crew and communicate clearly on site
