Estimator, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveyor
Heavy Civil Construction | $130,000 to $160,000 + Bonus | Langley, BC
You know the difference between an estimate that looks good on bid day and one that actually works in the field.
You understand production rates, crews, equipment, sequencing and construction methodology. You can review a difficult set of drawings, identify the risks, challenge assumptions and build a number that gives the operations team a real chance to deliver profitable work.
Match Box Consulting Group, on behalf of our civil construction client, is seeking a Senior Civil Estimator to join an established and growing heavy civil contractor based in Langley, BC.
For more than 20 years, this company has delivered roads, underground utilities, earthworks and municipal infrastructure projects throughout British Columbia. It has earned its reputation through consistent execution, long-term relationships and a practical, hands-on approach to construction.
The business is large enough to pursue meaningful and complex projects, but still entrepreneurial enough that your experience, judgment and ideas will directly influence what gets built and how the company grows.
The OpportunityYou will take ownership of estimates for heavy civil projects generally valued between $5 million and $20 million, including municipal infrastructure, underground utilities, road construction and major earthworks.
This is not a narrow takeoff position.
You will be involved from the first review of an opportunity through tender submission, project handover and post-project analysis. You will work closely with the Estimating Manager, senior leadership, project teams, subcontractors and suppliers to determine the smartest and most competitive approach to the work.
For a veteran civil estimator, this is an opportunity to bring everything you have learned to a company that will value your input. You will have access to leadership, influence over major decisions and the ability to help shape estimating practices as the business continues to grow.
You will not be buried inside a large corporate estimating department or treated as someone who simply produces numbers. Your judgment will matter.
What You Will Be DoingPreparing complete estimates for tendered and negotiated civil construction projects
Completing detailed quantity takeoffs from drawings, specifications and project scopes
Developing budgets, production rates, crew compositions and construction approaches
Identifying project risks, scope gaps, constructability issues and commercial opportunities
Soliciting and evaluating subcontractor and supplier pricing
Recommending practical means, methods and alternative construction solutions
Attending site visits, pre-bid meetings and scope reviews
Reviewing addenda and incorporating scope changes throughout the bid process
Evaluating design options and recommending cost-effective solutions
Supporting Project Managers with change orders, extra work pricing and cost tracking
Participating in estimate handovers and post-project reviews
Improving estimating systems, historical cost data and lessons learned
At least four years of estimating experience within heavy civil construction
Strong experience with underground utilities, roadworks, earthworks or municipal infrastructure
A demonstrated ability to estimate projects in the $5 million to $20 million range
A practical understanding of civil construction methods, sequencing, equipment and production
Experience with Heavy Bid, Plan Swift or comparable estimating software
Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills
A diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline
The confidence to ask difficult questions, defend your numbers and communicate directly
Strong analytical, organizational and relationship-building skills
Above all, you are a builder-minded estimator.
You understand that the best estimate is not simply the lowest number. It is a clear, competitive and executable plan for winning work the company can deliver successfully.
The EnvironmentThis is a close-knit, ambitious and highly collaborative team.
The pace is quick, communication is direct and people are expected to participate. The strongest fit will be someone who enjoys working with experienced personalities, can handle some good-natured banter and is comfortable being accountable for their work.
The team is competitive, but not political. People challenge each other, solve problems together and take pride in winning good work.
Leadership is accessible and actively involved in the business. Good ideas are heard, experienced people are trusted and strong performance creates opportunity.
The company also places real value on camaraderie, with regular team events and family-inclusive activities that bring the wider organization together.
Where This Can LeadThe company believes in promoting from within and creating room for strong performers to advance.
