Correctional Peace Officers are essential members of the teams that maintain the safety and security of provincially operated custodial centres. The role includes monitoring inmate movement, conducting patrols and counts, managing behaviour, performing searches, and completing administrative duties such as report writing and data entry. Officers work directly with inmates to provide support, guidance, and act as a positive role model while respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals within the facility.

The Alberta Corrections’ Custody Operations Branch operates ten custodial centres across the province for adult and youth corrections, including Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre, Peace River Correctional Centre, Calgary Correctional Centre, Lethbridge Correctional Centre, Edmonton Remand Centre, Red Deer Remand Centre, Medicine Hat Remand Centre, Calgary Young Offenders Centre / Adult Female Annex, and Youth Attendance Centres in Calgary and Edmonton. Correctional Peace Officers at these centres provide supervision, program delivery, and support to successfully reintegrate youth back into the community.

  • Correctional Peace Officer 1 – $30.47 to $37.65 per hour ($2,361.44 to $2,917.63 bi‑weekly)
  • Correctional Peace Officer 2 – $34.43 to $42.78 per hour ($2,668.13 to $3,315.16 bi‑weekly)

Qualifications
  • High school diploma plus a minimum of two years of related experience (equivalencies considered).
  • Experience in conflict management and de‑escalation techniques.
  • Minimum age 18 years.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Valid unrestricted Class 5 Canadian Driver’s License (Probationary Class 5, GDL or Learners License not accepted).
  • Criminal Record Check with Fingerprinting (or adequate proof) issued within the last six months.
  • 5‑year commercial driver’s abstract issued within the last six months.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Level‑C Certification, including AED.
  • For positions in Young Offender Centres, a Vulnerable Sector Check issued within the last six months.
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Assets
  • Previous experience as a Correctional Peace Officer or Correctional Service Worker.
  • Experience as a police officer or auxiliary police member.
  • Experience in client group work (e.g., group homes, aboriginal camps).
  • Experience working with adults with mental health or behavioural issues.
  • Experience in public security (e.g., mall security, hospital security, airport screening officer, loss prevention officer, commissionaire, armed guard).
  • Experience in bylaw enforcement.
  • Military service focused on protection or security.
  • Emergency response experience (e.g., EMT, firefighter).
  • Experience working with youth (e.g., under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, education settings, services to youth with disabilities, mentorship, counseling, youth group homes).

This competition will create an eligibility list of qualified candidates to fill current and future vacancies for both wage and permanent Correctional Peace Officer positions. The number of positions to be filled has not been identified at this time. Positions may be permanent (full time, various shifts) or wage (casual schedule, pay for shifts worked). New employees will participate in a paid 2‑week orientation before assignment.
