Job Summary

The Registered Nurse – Operating Room (RN, O.R.) provides direct nursing care within the operating room, performing scrubbing and circulating duties and supporting the surgical team to deliver safe, high‑quality patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care of patients, identifying problems, planning interventions, performing and evaluating outcomes.
  • Receive and admit patients to the OR, coordinating care per physician and anaesthetist orders, setting priorities, and delegating tasks to appropriate staff.
  • Identify and reduce risk factors impacting patients and healthcare teams, acting as an advocate to protect patient autonomy, dignity, privacy and information access.
  • Modify care as needs change, initiating immediate treatment such as applying non‑invasive monitoring devices when required.
  • Obtain, check, set up and position supplies, instruments and equipment for surgery, ensuring functionality and reporting repairs.
  • Follow standardized count policy and provide appropriate documentation.
  • Perform scrub and circulation duties in the OR according to prescribed procedures and protocols.
  • Collect information from multiple sources using observation, communication and physical assessment skills to provide appropriate nursing care.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and research, identifying patient care issues and collecting data.
  • Act as an active member on nursing and hospital committees and councils to improve patient care and/or work environment.
  • Orient and educate nursing staff and students, serving as preceptor and mentor when appropriate.
  • Evaluate patient care programs, techniques and procedures, providing feedback on effectiveness and outcomes.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, families and staff, adhering to established safety and emergency practices.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an approved School of Nursing; current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). One (1) year of recent relevant clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area and completion of postgraduate coursework and/or certification applicable to that area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
  • Complete initial and ongoing patient assessment, clinical and diagnostic reasoning, and provide nursing care through appropriate technical, therapeutic and safety interventions.
  • Determine and manage emergency situations.
  • Recognize acuity changes.
  • Use factual information, prior learning and basic principles to support evidence‑based nursing decisions.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, caregivers, the public, medical staff and the interprofessional care team verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Promote person‑centered care with empathy, cultural sensitivity and advocacy.
  • Integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem‑solve effectively.
  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Collaborate with and promote cooperation among interprofessional care team members.
  • Operate related equipment, including relevant computer applications.
  • Maintain the physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
