Position Overview

Our Community Support Workers play a vital role in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to build skills, pursue their goals, strengthen relationships, and participate in meaningful community activities.

Reporting to the Program Supervisor, we have two (2) regular part-time Community Support Worker positions available. The successful incumbents will be providing person-centered support to an adult male with developmental disability and acquired brain injury. They will ensure the individual has opportunities for personal growth, community inclusion, recreation, potential employment, and maintenance/expansion of personal networks with a focus on health. Collaboration with individuals, families, colleagues, and community partners will promote independence, dignity, choice, and inclusion.

Shift Schedule

Position #1:
Fridays and Sundays 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Position #2:
Saturdays 6:00 am – 2:00 pm;
Sundays 10:00 pm – 6:00 am

Key Responsibilities

Promote dignity, respect, self‑determination, and individual rights.

Support individuals to make informed decisions and actively participate in their person‑centered plans.

Encourage and facilitate communication, choice, and personal goal setting.

Support individuals to access recreational, social, educational, and employment opportunities.

Foster meaningful community connections and relationships.

Assist individuals to participate fully in community life and contribute in meaningful ways.

Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of person‑centered plans.

Support skill development, independence, and increased self‑confidence.

Collaborate with families, support networks, and interdisciplinary professionals.

Provide support with daily activities, personal care, and health‑related needs as required.

Implement support strategies and follow individualized support plans.

Respond appropriately to emergencies and challenging situations.

Maintain a safe environment for individuals, staff, and community members.

Complete accurate documentation and reports.

Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Participate in team meetings, training, and ongoing professional development.

Assist with financial record keeping, including petty cash and individual expense tracking.

Provide one‑to‑one community‑based supports aligned with individual service plans.

Support participation in community, social, and recreational activities.

Implement positive behavioural support and behaviour‑management strategies.

Respond appropriately to challenging situations while maintaining safety and professionalism.

Complete required documentation and follow organizational policies.

Qualifications

Diploma in Community Social Services or a related field. A combination of experience and education will be considered.

Minimum one year of direct support experience with individuals with developmental disabilities, including complex medical or behavioural needs.

Strong understanding of community inclusion, person‑centered practices, and positive behaviour support strategies (training in behavioural intervention is an asset).

Experience supporting individuals in community‑based settings is an asset.

Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and time‑management skills.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Ability to remain professional, compassionate, and calm in high‑stress situations.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to follow prescribed lifting, transferring, and behaviour support techniques.

Flexibility to work varied shifts based on individual needs.

Requirements

Police Information Check (PIC) and Vulnerable Sector Check by the Ministry of Justice.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle (Class 4 an asset).

Valid Intermediate First Aid, Food Safe, and TB Health Certificate.

This role is a unionized position covered by a collective agreement and represented by BCGEU.
