Patient Care Technician

Overview

Position Objective:
Contributes to the provision of high-quality, cost-effective health care through the direct care of patients and in collaboration with other members of the health care team. Understands self-motivation in performing basic nursing care. Participates in the team nursing concept, completing tasks as delegated by the assigned nurse. May be trained to insert IVs on certain shifts/units; validation of training and skill will be documented upon successful completion.

• Provides direct care to patients with emphasis on personal hygiene in daily morning and bedtime care and comfort; initiates and maintains safety measures and comfort care.
• Assists with admission of patients by greeting, taking initial weight, vital signs, disrobing as necessary, and orienting the patient to room and equipment.
• Prioritizes discharge processes by assisting with dressing, gathering belongings, transport if necessary to lobby, and removal of equipment and supplies for environmental staff.
• Participates in patient care activities, monitors vital signs, intake and output, and other data collection per policy; obtains specimens as requested using approved procedures; assists with mobilization and/or positioning as ordered.
• Recognizes and reports pain, patient complaints, or changes in patient condition to the assigned nurse.
• Mentors new staff as needed and requested.
• Transports medications as necessary within the institution in accordance with policy and procedure; ensures medication delivery to authorized personnel per AAMC policy.
• Maintains adequate levels of supplies and equipment on the unit.
• Transports patients in accordance with established safety policies.
• Processes written medical staff orders according to policy and procedure; communicates STAT or urgent orders to the care provider.

• High School Diploma or GED
• One year of experience as a CNA in an acute care setting preferred
• If serving as a bilingual/multilingual interpreter, certification in Medical Interpretation is required to perform duties of a qualified interpreter

• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
• American Heart Association Health Care Provider BLS

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands:
Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
