Under the supervision of the Project Manager, performs landscaping tasks necessary to meet landscape contract specifications.

• Maintain landscapes of assigned contracts:
  • Mows turf areas using push mowers, walk‑behinds, riding mowers, and tractor with bush‑hog.
  • Trims turf areas using string trimmers and sidewalk edgers.
  • Trims shrubs for health, shape, and safety using hedge trimmers and loppers.
  • Prunes trees for health, shape, and safety using pole pruners, chain saw, and loppers.
  • Mulches, weeds, cultivates, and edges tree rings and other mulched areas using spades, wheelbarrows, and cultivators.
  • May apply chemicals including fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides using push spreader, backpack sprayer, and tractor with spreader, and must document each application according to Maryland Department of Agriculture requirements.
  • Removes debris from turf, mulch, and paved areas using rakes, push and backpack blowers, and tarpaulins.
  • Plants and maintains seasonal color displays using trowels, bulb drills, shovels, and hoses.
  • Other duties as assigned.
• Assist in planning and executing landscape operations:
  • Help choose appropriate plant material for various locations.
  • Prepare planting areas by grading, tilling, adding soil amendments, and removing existing vegetation using pick, shovel, tiller, tractor, chain saw, and rakes.
  • Plant various types of vegetation such as sod, bulbs, perennials, shrubs, and trees using pick, shovel, and augers.
  • May perform minor landscape construction projects such as installing metal edging, installing strip drains, building short steps.
  • May perform snow‑removal tasks such as shoveling, operating a snow thrower, plowing, and spreading ice‑melting chemicals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
• Work with, assist with supervising, and assist with training assigned crew members consisting of adults with and without differing abilities.

The incumbent must be able to stand 34%, walk 33% and sit 33% of the work time. Must be able to lift/carry 60 pounds, push/pull 100 pounds, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and handle. Must be able to alert to safety hazards and have a method of communication so those around can understand and respond. Must be able to see and tell colors, as driving and operating power equipment is required.

Due to the nature of work, heavy lifting (up to 60 pounds) is occasionally involved.

High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two (2) years of experience in landscape work including planting, mowing, pruning trees and shrubs, and using a variety of landscape‑related equipment such as mowers, tractors, and small gas‑powered equipment. Prefer one (1) year of supervising two or more people. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, be self‑motivated, and able to run the assigned crew in the foreman’s absence.
