Job SummaryThe Travel Training Specialist reports directly to the Director of Advancement and is responsible for the travel training needs of Opportunities Inc. programs. This position requires work in the office and in the field, depending on the organization’s needs. The Travel Training Specialist collaborates with Program teams—including Program Managers, Support Coordinators, and Community Support Professionals—to coordinate travel training schedules, create personalized plans, and achieve the travel goals set within each individual’s Person-Centered Plan.
The role also involves developing and maintaining partnerships with outside agencies that may refer clients for travel training, and working on programs that provide travel training to both clients and staff from other agencies.
This position is funded entirely through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) grant and is contingent upon continued availability of grant funds. The employment duration is tied to the grant period (1/1/2025‑12/31/2026) and may be subject to renewal based on additional funding.
FLSA Classification: Full time, Non‑Exempt
Essential Functions- Provide short‑term, comprehensive, one‑to‑one instruction to teach clients how to travel safely and independently using public transportation.
- Conduct group travel training for interested clients.
- Maintain active certification from an accredited organization (e.g., Easter Seals) as a Travel Trainer.
- Collaborate with the Director of Advancement, Program Managers, and Support Coordinators to identify clients who desire travel independence.
- Develop and complete intake and assessment processes, creating individualized goals and objectives for 1:1 travel training.
- Gain proficiency with trip‑planning software and assist clients in understanding route maps, schedules, and locating bus and train stops.
- Coordinate the WMATA Metro Access application process, tracking status and expirations.
- Maintain Metro Access card information, including expiration dates, within the iCareManager (iCM) database.
- Coordinate the reduced fare application process and other WMATA programs for eligible clients.
- Develop a regular schedule of travel training for clients in services.
- Complete all billing requirements for travel training through the Developmental Disabilities Administration, including necessary documentation and coordination with Finance for billing.
- Train newly hired CSP staff and provide refresher training as needed.
- Submit monthly travel training reports to the Director of Advancement.
- Attend Program meetings and update the team on travel training goals, status, and needs.
- Coordinate with the Director of Advancement on travel training programs for awarded grants.
- Attend Transitioning Youth and other resource fairs to promote Opportunities Inc.’s travel training program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Certified Travel Training Instructor (CTTI) credential preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a travel training capacity.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with people with disabilities.
