Acoustical Ceiling Technician | Tri-State Area, PA

The Acoustical Ceiling Technician is expected to apply plasterboard or other wallboard to ceilings or interior walls of buildings. They may also apply or mount acoustical tiles or blocks, strips, or sheets of shock-absorbing materials to ceilings and walls of buildings to reduce or reflect sound.

Essential Functions
  • Accurately measure height, width, length, and other proportions, including but not limited to establishing correct ceiling heights.
  • Basic material take-off to ensure proper material selection and quantity needed.
  • Work with blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
  • Read blueprints and perform proper layout for work to be put in place.
  • Examine blueprints and specifications to determine types of grid and tiles and where they are appropriately installed.
  • Work with materials such as wood, metal, plastic, fiberglass, and/or drywall.
  • Utilize appropriate tools to build or repair structural components.
  • Join materials with nails, screws, staples, or adhesives.
  • Use levels, rules, plumb bobs, framing squares, and lasers to ensure everything is level and secure.
  • Check work along the way to ensure it's up to code and specifications.
  • Install all types of ceiling grid systems (standard, slotted, and specialty products).
  • Inspect drywall partitions, mechanical mountings, and masonry surface for plumb and level, using a laser level.
  • Hang or mechanically fasten support wires for acoustical ceiling grid from building structure.
  • Hang dry lines (stretched string) to wall molding to guide positioning of main runners.
  • Nail or screw molding to wall to support and seal joint between ceiling tile and wall.
  • Scribe and cut edges of tile to fit wall where wall molding is not specified.
  • Measure and mark surface to lay out work according to blueprints and drawings.
  • Install acoustical ceiling main runners and cross runners.
  • Cut tiles for fixture and borders, using keyhole saw, and insert tiles into supporting framework.
  • Erect scaffolding.
  • Always exercise the proper use of PPE.
  • Coordinate with other trades on project to ensure an efficient installation flow.
  • Attend required safety training as assigned.
Required

Education and Experience
  • Knowledge and experience working with commercial carpentry tools and building materials.
  • Knowledge and understanding of construction safety devices and PPE.
  • 2+ years commercial ceiling installation experience.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Participation in a secondary or post‑secondary trade curriculum or 4‐year apprenticeship program in Carpentry.
  • 4+ years’ commercial ceiling installation experience.

Work Environment

Carpenters work indoors and outdoors on many types of construction projects, with varying degrees of exposure to the elements.

Physical Requirements
  • Due to the physical nature of the position, employee must have full dexterity of their hands and arms.
  • Employee must be able to see objects close and far away.
