Assistant Professor of Social Work

Full time, 40 hours, exempt position in the Social Work (PM) organizational unit.

The Department of Social Work & Youth Services in the Crystal M. Lange College of Health and Human Services at Saginaw Valley State University seeks applicants for full-time, tenure-track faculty appointments at the assistant or associate professor level, to begin Fall 2027. Candidates will be considered for teaching within the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) curriculum, the Master of Social Work (MSW) curriculum, or both, depending on qualifications, experience, and program need.

Applicants should indicate in their letter of introduction their areas of interest and readiness to teach at the undergraduate level, the graduate level, or both.

BSW teaching responsibilities span the undergraduate curriculum, including direct practice, policy, human behavior, and, as assigned, practicum education. MSW teaching responsibilities are within the Advanced Generalist curriculum, an immersive program in which every course addresses theory and practice at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels in urban and rural settings, and which requires students and faculty to engage in learning outside the classroom.

Faculty members are also responsible for student advising, scholarship, and service.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Teach undergraduate BSW and/or graduate MSW courses as assigned
  • Develop and deliver instruction across practice, policy, human behavior, and, as assigned, practicum education
  • Maintain currency in course content and instructional methods consistent with CSWE EPAS accreditation standards
  • Advise assigned BSW or MSW students on curriculum planning, practicum readiness, and professional development
  • Maintain an active program of scholarship, research, or creative activity consistent with rank and tenure expectations
  • Serve on department, college, and university committees as assigned
  • Support program-level accreditation, assessment, and curriculum development activities
  • Engage in service to the social work profession and the community
  • Use of technology, including learning management systems and electronic communication, is expected.
  • Participation in department, program, and administrative meetings, and occasional travel for professional or community engagement, may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Master of Social Work degree from a CSWE-accredited social work program and licensure (or eligibility for licensure) through the State of Michigan as an LMSW.
  • A minimum of two years of full-time post-MSW practice as a social worker and social work teaching experience are also required.
  • Doctorate in social work or related field or at least 15 hours of credits completed toward a doctorate degree in social work or a related field.
  • Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Teaching experience in social work practice, policy, and human behavior, and an established research agenda.
  • Five years of direct practice experience at the MSW level is highly desirable.
  • For candidates teaching within the MSW curriculum, experience teaching or practicing within an Advanced Generalist framework across micro, mezzo, and macro systems is preferred.

Salary range and benefits include:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition waiver

Working conditions include:

  • Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
  • All work associated with this role must be performed within the state of Michigan.
