Senior Technical Director, Structural Engineering
WSP USA is seeking a Senior Vice President, Structural Engineer to provide regional and multi‑sector leadership for structural engineering projects in Lansing, MI. Additional locations considered include Detroit, MI. The role delivers subject‑matter expertise, technical deliverables, design quality, safety, and structural soundness for building and infrastructure projects and programs.
Your Impact- Provide proactive and strategic process and people leadership for design, implementation, and administration of engineering discipline project and program involvement.
- Lead the most complex and largest scale structural engineering projects, ensuring project budgets, internal and external events, tracking hours and expenses, and subcontractor supervision.
- Assist in pursuing and developing business and executing work for current and potential structural work within the designated geography.
- Lead technical aspects of contract negotiation, presentations, and meetings.
- Drive long‑term strategy, growth, and pipeline development for Structural Engineering work with a focus on bridges and transportation infrastructure opportunities.
- Accountable for profitable performance and successful completion of projects within the specified area.
- Drive compliance and accountability at all levels with applicable federal, state, and local engineering and construction laws, codes, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee internal vision and mission for the engineering discipline, ensuring alignment with business operations strategy and continuous improvement of certifications, accreditations, and client ratings.
- Lead engineering discipline meetings, continuing educational opportunities, and provide updates and recommendations to staff to foster innovation, development, and quality project delivery.
- Serve as the engineering discipline representative/liaison to external entities including federal, state, and local agencies, clients, subcontractors, industry groups, and community entities.
- Provide senior leadership for proposals and project work scopes, pricing, budget, and performance metrics for the engineering discipline.
- Interpret and summarize data, including reports and documents for complex projects and initiatives that result in sound engineering and regulatory conclusions.
- Provide discipline leadership to multidisciplinary project teams and contribute to high level strategic advice to clients.
- Maintain current business contacts and client base for high level structural engineering services, including identifying additional business development opportunities and cross‑selling of other WSP capabilities.
- Remain current in latest structural engineering techniques and practices, and collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future‑ready solutions for clients.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 15+ years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering, structural/civil, and infrastructure design.
- Engineer license required (multi‑state preferred).
- Advanced proficiency with structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, standard of care, and the application to permitting and project work‑related issues.
- Extensive advanced proficiency with structural design.
- Advanced knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Demonstrated ability with establishing, implementing, and managing multiple larger‑scale discipline‑related programs, documents, projects, and practices for a line(s) of business.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to manage staff and effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels.
