As a transportation engineer licensed specialist 13 within the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Bureau of Bridges and Structures, your expertise in analysis, coordination and attention to detail will directly contribute to enhancing the department overall. Responsibilities- Serving as the department’s statewide specialist for the inspection of the big bridge inventory. This includes bridges with a deck area greater than 100,000 square feet; movable, complex and unique structures; and structures with fatigue-sensitive and nonredundant steel tension member (NSTM) details. Complex features include bridge component(s) or member(s) with advanced or unique structural members or operational characteristics, construction methods, and/or requiring specific inspection procedures.
This includes mechanical and electrical elements of movable spans and cable-related members of suspension and cable-stayed superstructures. This position requires possession of status as a qualified team leader (QTL). - Supporting the bridge inspection program manager in the development and implementation of the quality assurance/ quality control (QA/QC) program for bridge inspections and evaluations at the statewide and regional levels.
- Assisting in establishing alignment with bridge inspection policies and guidelines statewide and support with inspection related tasks.
- Administering consultant contracts for the performance of project related tasks.

QualificationsEducation
Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
Experience
Four years of professional experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including two years equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11 or one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 12 or Transportation Engineer Licensed 12.
To be considered for this position you must
- Possession of a registered professional engineering license as required by the State of Michigan.
- Possess a valid driver s license is required.
- This position is required to operate a motor vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) of between 10,001 and 26,000 pounds. This requires the ability to possess and maintain a valid Medical Examiners Certificate as a condition of employment.
- If applicable, attach a copy of your official college transcripts and/or foreign degree evaluation with your application. for the State of Michigan (SOM) definition of an Official College Transcript. Applicants who possess foreign degrees must have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents. Civil Service accepts evaluations from organizations listed on the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc.
- Possess status as a Qualified Team Leader which includes:
- Successful completion of NHI-130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course.
- Successful completion of 18 hours of approved bridge inspection recurrent training over the last five years.
- Successful completion of the Field Proficiency Exam in the last two years.
- Successful completion of NHI-130078 Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges.
