Overview
Job Description The Health & Safety Specialist contributes in the implementation and execution of the company’s Health & Safety Strategy with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and proactive measures. Support and drive a progressive approach to Health & Safety by sustaining or enhancing local practices, processes, tools, and training programs needed to ensure total effectiveness of the area’s health and safety management system.
Engage with regional management to leverage cultural change within the Health & Safety program and work with the workforce to create and sustain a safety culture that strives for zero losses in the region. Through the Area Health & Safety Manager, support management to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
- Conduct walkthrough audits and reviews of established health and safety procedures at sites within the region, observe conditions and work practices, make recommendations, champion change, and recognize positive achievements/behaviors.
- Collaborate with Area Operations Manager, Site Operations Managers and Human Resources to establish safety performance metrics and goals.
- Continually engage salary and hourly employees to ensure the desired safety behaviors are demonstrated at all levels of the organization.
- Provide regular support and guidance to facility personnel to maintain a safe work environment that complies with the company’s policies and state/federal regulations; ensure relevant processes are implemented and programs are in compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations.
- Provide guidance on matters related to compliance with MSHA regulations.
- Compile, analyze and interpret accident and loss statistical data in alignment with KPI and recommend actions to achieve goals by supporting continuous improvement and zero-injury targets; participate in safety reviews and audits of projects, new facilities, equipment or processes with Engineering and Operations personnel.
- Assist with root cause analysis for accidents, incidents and near-miss events; assist in development and implementation of corrective actions and ensure there is a protocol to follow up on corrective actions so they are thoroughly implemented and sustained.
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Safety Management, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics or related subject or equivalent experience and training.
- Professional certification such as Certified Mine Safety Specialist, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Certified Safety Professional is preferred.
- Minimum two years of progressive health and safety experience or operations experience, preferably in a mining, manufacturing or construction environment.
- MSHA experience is desired; OSHA/DOT experience is a strong plus.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities appropriately.
