Position Summary & Objective

Welds metal components together. Layout, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms and repair machine parts using knowledge of welding techniques (including brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment), metallurgy, and engineering requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Welds metal parts together using gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes.
  • Perform related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and welds overlay metal parts.
  • May locate cracks using dye penetrant NDT methods and repair cracks in large fabrications.
  • Position and set up components in preparation for weld repairs and/or fabrication.
  • Lay out parts and assemblies according to specifications. Create templates and other work aids to hold and align parts. Rig (cranes) and fixture parts to be welded.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions and adjust amperage, voltage, and speed during joining to assure required weld deposit.
  • Inspect grooves, angles, gap allowances, and related aspects of assembly to ensure conformance to specifications using micrometers, calipers, and related precision measuring instruments.
  • Pre-heat parts for effective welding.
  • Perform quality work checks to ensure the product meets quality standards, using a variety of inspection tools and devices.
Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow basic blueprints, engineering drawings, bill of materials, and other written instructions or procedures.
  • Ability to use industry standards for proper equipment setup and efficient use.
  • Familiar with welding gases and appropriate uses to determine type of welding to be used, such as shielded metal arc welding, inert gas welding, electrode welding, and oven treatment, applying knowledge of metals, contours, and specified tolerances.
  • Ability to work with typical shop equipment and power tools and operate overhead cranes and forklifts with proficiency.
  • Ability to inspect welded joints, grooves, angles, gap allowances, and related aspects of assembly to ensure conformance to specifications using micrometers, calipers, and related precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to check engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations.
  • Proficient in using and adjusting MIG welders to the proper amperage and voltage for welding with various sizes of flux core wire.
  • Able to handle tasks involving moderate physical exertion and may need to stoop, bend, twist, and climb in confined areas.
  • Able to wear a positive-pressure welding hood if required.
  • Able to meet time and quality standards without compromising welding safety standards.
  • Capable of operating overhead cranes to position or move work pieces.
  • Demonstrate basic welding skills during initial test (vertical and horizontal multi-pass fillet welding with 1/16 inch and 3/32 inch flux core and solid welding wire).
  • Interpret welding prints to determine weld type and placement.
  • Know welding wire types for different metals and gas types used with various wires.
  • Read a tape measure and blueprints.
  • Use air, power, and hand tools, including a torch and grinder.
  • Be mechanically inclined and able to gather and analyze information, coordinating with teammates.
  • Function independently within the context of the team’s day-to-day activities.
  • Pre-heat parts for effective welding and stress-relieve finished components.
  • Work safely at all times, following established policies and procedures.
