Position Overview

Full‑time Camp Property Ranger at Owasippe Scout Reservation, located in Twin Lake, Michigan. The position is a key member of the camping team, providing on‑site management and maintenance of camp facilities and properties. The role requires the ranger to live on the site, supervise and organize employees and/or volunteers responsible for seasonal and year‑round maintenance, health and safety, and security duties.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair the facility’s structure, machinery, equipment and grounds, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, trucks, tractors, motorboats, pools, wells and pump systems.
  • Perform skilled trades work such as carpentry, painting, construction, repair or alteration of structures (walls, roofs, office fixtures).
  • Perform minor tree trimming and removal, snow plowing and grass cutting; manage the fleet of vehicles with basic auto‑mechanics knowledge.
  • Protect the campgrounds by enforcing rules and regulations, securing perimeters, identifying safety hazards, and reporting maintenance problems.
  • Maintain compliance with Scouting, local, state and federal regulations, the Guide to Safe Scouting and the BSA National Camp Standards.
  • Support summer camp operations and year‑round scouting events and outside group rentals, working closely with the reservation director.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to part‑time and seasonal rangers, caretakers and volunteer laborers; coordinate projects and supervise camp staff during projects.
  • Serve on Council and volunteer committees related to property; supervise maintenance contractors as assigned.
  • Maintain business records, submit regular reports, implement a proactive facilities maintenance plan, keep expenses within budget and comply with Council business procedures.
  • Maintain harmonious relationships with the local community, government officials, neighbors, vendors and volunteers; respond promptly to emails and telephone messages.
  • Work irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and some spring and summer holidays, in various environmental conditions.
Education
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (required).
  • Advanced Trade School training (highly desirable).
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Physically and mentally fit.
  • Must establish residency in housing on camp property.
  • Successful completion of Safeguarding Youth Training.
  • Submission of a BSA Adult application (includes background check).
  • Must subscribe to and live by the Scout Oath and Law.
  • Current, valid state driver’s license.
  • Ability to perform a variety of basic maintenance skills.
  • General knowledge of construction and related practices and procedures.
  • Specialized technical skill (at least one) is highly desirable.
  • Facilities management experience preferred.
  • Prior Scouting experience a plus.

  • Understand Scouting values and the purpose of camp.
Licenses
  • Once hired, attend and successfully complete BSA Ranger School.
  • Once hired, obtain a Pool Operator’s License.
  • Willing and able to attend continuous training.
Benefits

$50,000 – $55,000, housing and utilities included.
