Bird / Insect Zoology Technician - Professional Aide
We are looking for an energetic, outdoors‑oriented individual for a temporary or on‑call position. The role involves professional support for field and laboratory activities related to research projects on rare birds and insects across Michigan.
Position Summary- This is a temporary or on‑call role. Temps may work two (2) nine‑month terms with a week break in between and may switch to an on‑call period; on‑call employees are allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve‑month period.
- Field technicians will conduct surveys, collect data and habitat samples, maintain equipment, process specimens, and enter data.
- Work is typically in remote wetlands, requiring long hours, flexible schedules, and resilience to hot, humid weather and challenging terrains.
- Assignments may involve week‑long backpacking and occasional over‑the‑weekend or holiday work.
- Travel occurs throughout Michigan, with day trips, overnight stays in hotels or campgrounds, and occasional long‑distance travel.
- Knowledge of and ability to identify bird and insect species of Michigan.
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in remote areas.
- Problem‑solving skills and adaptability.
- Experience in conducting bird or insect surveys; ability to identify species by sight.
- Familiarity with Michigan and/or Midwestern ecosystems and common plants.
- Comfortable using watercraft (kayaks, canoes, small boats).
- Navigation skills via map, compass, and GPS.
- Proficiency using technology: web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Physical capability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs; ability to navigate rough terrain.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
