Position: Maintenance Worker 400

The Operations and Maintenance Division within the Public Service Department is seeking skilled individuals to join their crew of Maintenance Workers.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working on a paving crew to place non-compacted asphalt in proper location with a shovel and then raking the material with a lute.
  • Grading sub-base for installation of pavement, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and setting concrete forms for pavement, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
  • Visually checking form work to ensure that the forms meet line and grade requirements.
  • Placing and finishing concrete into the forms using rakes, shovels, derbies, come-alongs, and other concrete tools for proper finishing.
  • Driving various trucks and operating snow plows and road salting equipment.
  • Operating heavy power assisting tools.
  • Driving dump trucks and other vehicles to deliver supplies, tools, parts, and materials.
  • Operating equipment such as bobcats and forklifts, and serving as a crew person on asphalt paving machines.
  • Performing landscaping operations, including restoring lawns and parkways after construction or damage.
  • Conducting safety checks and performing minor repairs and maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performing street repairs using concrete, asphalt, sealant, and pavement preservation materials.
  • Setting up traffic control devices including cones and barricades.

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience in asphalt work, sewer maintenance, or road and street maintenance, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License, Group B, with Air Brakes and N (tank) Endorsements.
  • Group A license must be acquired within ninety (120) days of employment.
  • Ability to pass a physical examination required by the State of Michigan for operating vehicles with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or more.

Post-Hire Requirements:

  • Complete and pass the Solid Waste Training Program within four weeks of employment.
  • Participate in MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training.
  • Complete Traffic Regulator Training and Certification bi-annually.
  • Maintain Power and Industrial Truck Training and Certification every three years.
  • Overtime or shift work may be required for snow and ice control or emergencies.
