Position Summary: The Laboratory Assistant performs all specimen collection by phlebotomy from the appropriate in‑house or off‑site locations. In addition, the Assistant obtains other specimens when indicated and instructs patients in specimen collection as necessary. The role may involve entering pathology specimens into various computerized information systems, as well as preparing and staining cytology specimens. The Assistant performs tasks across all laboratory areas under the direction of supervisors, clinical laboratory technologists, cytotechnologists, or other designated laboratory personnel, applying the necessary knowledge and training to function effectively.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Performs proper specimen collection (blood and non‑blood), including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens; complies with all laboratory procedure standards.
- Collects, verifies, and processes patient registration data and test orders/entries into hospital and laboratory information systems, including ABN compliance.
- Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection‑control, hazardous waste, and other policies and protocols.
- Performs waived tests and assists on other testing platforms with technical oversight.
- Assists in quality control and performance‑improvement activities.
- Ensures quality, timeliness, and customer‑service standards are met.
- Orients and trains new staff.
- Assists in ensuring compliance with all regulatory, agency, and statutory requirements governing the department.
- Answers telephone calls, performs computer tasks, prints reports, and provides test results as applicable.
- Performs therapeutic phlebotomies.
- Dispatched and manages specimens and slides for consults, referrals, and other requests; creates appropriate transport lists for tracking.
- Performs other related duties as required and directed.
- Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Certified phlebotomy technician.
- Preferred: Previous experience drawing blood or a phlebotomy training course in an approved program.
- Preferred: Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
