Position: GIS Technician, (A264111-1), 203, G.I.S.

To develop a geographic database of new and existing Utilities infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job‑related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

• Performs technical duties in the maintenance, development, and operation of the geographic information systems.
• Creates, maintains, and edits departmental databases, including the preparation of data dictionaries and documentation.
• Prepares and executes queries of individual electronic databases to produce products that include but are not limited to maps, tables, plots, charts, and graphs.
• Using the G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) and other technologies, prepares a variety of analysis of electronic information, including the preparation of multi‑layered and linked maps and tabular data; prepares graphic materials showing the results of these analysis and assists staff in interpreting the results.
• Ensures the quality and accuracy of a variety of geographic information system data, including researching and revising maps and data from other data sources.
• Operates a variety of geographic information system input and output devices, including scanners, printers, and plotters.
• Must be familiar with field data collection and analysis including the use of the GPS (Global Positioning System) equipment.
• Performs related graphical support as needed.
• Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
• Performs other related work as assigned.

COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES Knowledge

• Basic understanding of principles and methodologies associated with G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) Technology.
• Basic database management principles and techniques using common software packages.
• Technologies used in recording and conducting analysis of land use, planning and geographic information, including cartographic/the basic symbols and terminology used in mapping.
• Digitizing and data manipulation procedures from G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems).

• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• Ability to process and analyze complex datasets and information.
• Ability to manage database and update records.
• Ability to prepare routine analysis using G.I.S (Geographic Information Systems) software.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and customers.
• Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
• Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees and respond to general public complaints.
• Ability to project a positive and professional image of the City of Laredo.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
• Ability to comply with all City of Laredo's policies and procedures.
• Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position.
