Appointment Full‑time Equivalency: 0.74 maximum (non‑exempt)
This is a temporary appointment with a pre‑determined end date not to exceed 1 year and is subject to earlier termination if necessary. Temporary employees have no entitlement or expectation of continued employment above the appointment period. The position may average up to 29 hours per week.
Classification SummaryUnder the supervision of the New Mexico State University Fire Department (NMSU FD), the Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT‑P) will perform duties associated with providing rescue services and emergency medical care to the sick and injured on the NMSU Las Cruces campus, in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations and NMSU FD policies and medical protocols. The EMT‑P will provide emergency and non‑emergency services as requested and complete incident and activity reports.
Participation in NMSU and/or EMS training as identified by the NMSU Fire Chief is required.
- Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls calmly, efficiently and promptly.
- Administer basic and restricted advanced life support to patients in a pre‑hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards.
- Keep equipment and protocols up‑to‑date and participate in continuing education courses to maintain EMS licenses.
- Ensure that UTVs and passenger vehicles are response‑ready.
- Perform all duties in accordance with EMT‑P scope of practice as outlined in Title 7 Chapter 27 Part 11 of the New Mexico Administrative Code.
- High School Diploma or GED certificate (required).
- One (1) year of paid, full‑time EMT‑P experience or two (2) years in a volunteer or combination paid/volunteer EMS service.
- National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic certification with ability to acquire New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic license.
- NM Class E Driver’s license.
- Strong knowledge of EMS service site operations, applicable standards of care, equipment functions, and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent communication skills, ability to handle multiple tasks and maintain quality and safety standards.
- Advanced certification or prior experience as an EMT‑Paramedicli>
- Proficiency in advanced procedures such as peripheral venous access, blood drawing, and intraosseous access.
- Final background check through NMSU Police Department.
- Drug test for illicit substances.

Environment involves moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises. Physical effort is moderate with heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds. Work may include 12‑hour schedules, up to twice a week.
