Electrician/ Electrician Installation, Installation Technician
Performs daily activities related to the installation, repair, and maintenance of street lighting systems for the City.
Work Situation Factors
Position involves managing competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal hours, and responding to customer issues. May involve emergency responses, extended hours including evenings and weekends, on-call and standby status. Regular attendance is essential for service continuity. The position is subject to drug testing per applicable State, Federal, and City policies.
Physical Factors
Requires heavy physical effort, including standing, bending, stooping, squatting; ability to lift and push up to 80 pounds and operate equipment weighing up to 500 pounds. Must have sufficient speech, hearing, vision (including color distinction), manual dexterity, mobility, and reflexes to perform essential functions effectively.
Environmental Factors
Primarily outdoor work exposed to weather, traffic, moving vehicles, electrical hazards, noise, dust, dirt, pollen; potential exposure to open manholes and street excavations. Safety gear includes vest, hard hat, face mask, gloves, apron, harness, safety shoes, goggles, and ear protection.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the senior level in the Street Lighting Technician series, requiring greater technical knowledge for troubleshooting and emergency response.
First consideration will be given to current City of Las Cruces employees who meet minimum qualifications. Meeting qualifications does not guarantee selection.

Responsibilities include:
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED and four years of electrical trade experience. Completion of an electrical apprenticeship or an associate degree in Electronic Technology or related field may be preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be considered.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable record.
- Journeyman Electrician license (JE-98).
- Class B commercial driver’s license and IMSA Certification in Work Zone within 12 months of hire.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Knowledge of electrical systems, safety practices, traffic control, construction, and record keeping.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, ensure customer satisfaction, read and interpret policies, maintain records, communicate effectively, and operate tools and vehicles safely.
- Skills in applying rules, managing assignments, responding to inquiries, working independently or in teams, and using software for record keeping and reporting.
