Installation Technician, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Performs a variety of gas-skilled work and services in the installation and maintenance of natural gas meters and regulators to ensure efficient gas service to residents and businesses with minimal disruption.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Works outside or within customer residences and/or businesses; exposure to natural gas and carbon monoxide fumes, fire, and explosive hazards.
PHYSICAL FACTORS
Heavy physical work involving balancing, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching above shoulder height; pushing/pulling/lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds; sufficient clarity of speech, hearing, vision, manual dexterity, and personal mobility to perform essential job functions effectively.
WORK SITUATION FACTORS
Position requires stand-by duties for emergency response, irregular shifts, extended hours beyond an eight-hour day, weekend work, and working in all weather conditions. Regular attendance is essential. The position involves multiple demands, deadlines, customer interactions, and is subject to drug testing and release of information regulations.
Meeting or exceeding minimum qualifications does not guarantee participation. Priority consideration is given to current City of Las Cruces employees meeting all requirements.
This position is a full-time, union-represented role in the Utilities Department, graded at BC15.
- Locates gas leaks, controls hazards, and performs emergency responses.
- Operates detection equipment, installs and maintains gas meters and regulators, and performs repairs.
- Designs and installs distribution components, and documents work.
- Serves as emergency standby, responds to customer orders, and completes work records.
- Works on special projects as assigned.
Requires a high school diploma, two years of journey-level gas fitting experience, and a valid driver’s license with a clean record. A Journeyman Gas Fitter License is required. Experience with natural gas distribution systems is desirable.
Knowledge of: Gas systems, safety practices, record keeping, customer service, and relevant regulations.
Abilities include: Accurate measurements, equipment operation, technical reading/writing, data entry, communication, and independent judgment.
Skills in: Equipment use, problem-solving, report preparation, and interpersonal communication.
