The Aircraft Mechanic III - Structures will primarily perform all scheduled and unscheduled aircraft and equipment maintenance, both on and off equipment, on assigned aircraft and equipment in accordance with the Performance Work Statement (PWS), M1 policy, DAFI 21-101 (and supplements), as well as industry standards.
Responsibilities- Maintains repairs/modifies aircraft structures and structural components and engines of complex to extreme difficulty.
- Maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
- Applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions and applies technical expertise in restoring equipment condition and operation.
- Applies professional technical expertise and guidance to solve complex problems by interpreting technical data such as blueprints or manufacturers' manuals.
- Position requires comprehensive knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting/repair procedures and replacement of components, and knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modification and repair.
- Has knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, cable tensiometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers, etc.
- Will perform aircraft and equipment maintenance on other assigned MDS aircraft in a highly cross-utilization/trained environment.
- May be required to perform at a moderate level of competency in one or more areas: repair and reclamation, egress, electro/environmental, avionics, wheel & tire, sheet metal, composite repair, propulsion, fuels, AGE, armament, munitions, non-destructive inspection (NDI), and pneudraulics.
- Maintains aircraft and support equipment forms records IAW AF procedures utilizing AF Information Systems and forms as required.
- Performs transient aircraft support, CDDAR team chief, Phase dock, QA augmentation, Wheel & Tire duties.
- Minimum of seven years performing aircraft structural and metals technology maintenance functions in a military environment and attainment of an Air Force 7 level (or equivalent) is required.
- Must be reliable, self-motivated, and able to deal with stressful situations and timelines while maintaining a professional and non-confrontational attitude.
- Shall assist other personnel and work centers as directed, and perform other duties as assigned.
- Must be able to make entries in aircraft logs and records and provide guidance and technical expertise to lower level technicians throughout all aircraft modifications and/or maintenance effort.
- Experience and ability to provide technical support to structural/mechanical engineers and customers alike.
- Excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule.
- May occasionally lead teams through more complex relevant aircraft tasks and may make entries in aircraft logs and records.
- Working knowledge of principles applying to aircraft systems, maintenance directives, data reporting, and using technical data is mandatory.
- Knowledge of Air Force supply and efficiency reporting procedures is mandatory.
- Knowledge of handling, use, and disposal of hazardous waste and materials is mandatory.
- Ability to obtain/maintain the security clearance level as mandated by the government customer.
- Maintains qualifications on the Special Certification Roster (SCR) as directed.
- Must possess a current valid U.S. Driver's License and speak, read, write, and understand English.
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Position requires complying with unique commuting/travel requirements.
- Work environment includes aircraft hangars and outdoor ramps, in proximity to running equipment and aircraft.
