Medical Social Worker – University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC)

Position Summary

Performs professional level social work in areas such as assessing patient needs and coordinating a safe, comprehensive discharge plan which may involve emotional support to the patient, the family, or significant others. The role supports UMC’s mission to provide life‑saving treatment and promote successful medical outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Assessments of patient and family needs, planning, and coordination for discharge
• Provide counseling and emotional support to patients and families
• Develop and implement individual treatment and intervention plans
• Maintain effective working relationships with hospital personnel
• Prepare written records and reports
• Adhere to department and hospital safety, infection control, and emergency response policies

Qualifications
  • Education/Experience
    Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and one (1) year of professional level social work experience in a social service agency or hospital setting; or an internship or field work related to the profession.
  • Licensing/Certification
    Must possess a valid State of Nevada License as a Social Worker.
  • Experience
    Three (3) years of acute‑care experience as a Social Worker.
  • Training
    Previous recent documented practicum under the Social Services department.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and

Physical Requirements

• Knowledge of social work principles, federal, state, and local regulations, and community resources.
• Counseling techniques including family dynamics, cultural diversity, and crisis intervention.
• Ability to assess and interview patients and families.
• Competence in preparing written records and reports.
• Physical stamina to stand or walk for extended periods, lift up to 20 pounds occasionally, and use standard office equipment.
